Get Your Spring On!

Get Your Spring On!
by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

Some of the best collabos (or collabs, short for collaborations) are now in full bloom!

Collaborations are a way to breath new life into a brand and create interest by joining forces with popular artists, designers, entertainers, and creative visionaries. We’ve mentioned it here before when certain retailers presented successful, exclusive collections by  Alexander McQueen, Gwen Stefani, Karl Lagerfeld, Missoni, Lanvin, and Jimmy Choo.

It often makes a once unaffordable designer not just accessible to the wealthy but available to the rest of us at a great value that we wouldn’t lose sleep over.  An easy way to determine if the collaboration is a success is whether the the products sell out quickly or if the partnership resurfaces again for later projects.

For me, it’ll always be about top design, and how to shop well and look good at unbeatable prices!

DKNY x Opening Ceremony

DKNY has teamed up with fellow native New Yorker and indie brand Opening Ceremony to create a limited edition collection based on 15 pieces from its archives that has been tweaked, reissued, and updated.

This 90′s-influenced throwback to DKNY’s earlier sporty and streetwear vibe features a selection of cropped tops, hooded shirts, bodycon maxi-dresses, jumpsuits, and iconic DKNY graphics.

Ranging in price from $145 to $665, the capsule collection is available at all Opening Ceremony stores and online.

Check out the DKNY x Opening Ceremony Behind The Scenes Rollerskating Jam Video Shoot

 Derek Lam x Kohl’s

Available at Kohl’s on April 5, Derek Lam is the latest designer to participate in their DesigNation series. Influenced and inspired by Rio de Janeiro for this spring collection, it’s a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues and colors at play with a subtle sexiness that goes day to night, all fabulously priced from $36 to $88.

He’s on-trend with the latest in women’s fashion and some of the highlights include bomber jackets, hooded snap trench jacket, cutout swimsuits, draw-string shorts and skirts, maxi-dresses and sophisticated jumpsuits. This mini collection for the mass retailer is a showstopper and will keep you runway ready well into summer and beyond.

Apolis + J. Crew

J. Crew has teamed up with the global citizens of LA-based Apolis and brothers Raan and Shea Parton for two limited edition Men’s chambray swim trunks.

These boardshorts are handcrafted in a California factory that has been making swimwear for lifeguards and watermen since the 1960s.

The trunks are made with a natural indigo-dyed, Spanish chambray that will lighten in color as it is exposed to the elements to create the perfect lived-in, been surfing much look.

Accented with a button fly and drawstring, a cargo side flap pocket with key holder, an Apolis patch, and a bold stripe in royal blue or red.

Available exclusively online at jcrew.com and also at select J. Crew stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Costa Mesa, New York, and Boston.

Uniqlo x Celia Birtwell

Celebrating a wicked blend of art, whimsy and timelessness, acclaimed UK artist and textile designer Celia Birtwell teamed up with Japanese brand Uniqlo. Celia was able to go through her vast library from the 1960′s and ’70′s and reference certain moments.

When she met with the team from Uniqlo Japan, they went through the sketchbooks and reference files together where she subsequently developed and re-worked those selected specifically for Uniqlo.

Her iconic and bold prints have been re-imagined for an exclusive range of T-shirts, tunics, totes, shirts, trousers, and stoles. Uniqlo x Celia Birtwell is available at Uniqlo stores in San Francisco, New York, New Jersey, the UK, and Japan and prices from $9.90 – $29.90.

See the bold patterns come to life in the Uniqlo video advert:

For the sole collector, collabos are the ultimate game changer as we take a look at the lively and most sought after kicks in the shoe game.

Reebok X Keith Haring

Reebok’s Affili’Art Program now presents a line in conjunction with the Keith Haring Foundation. Previous collaborations produced collections of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ryan McGinness.

The partnership of Keith Haring’s iconic and most recognizable works EverymanBarking Dog and Radiant Baby with Reebok’s classic silhouettes like the Classic Leather, Classic Leather Mid, NPC II, Workout Plus and Freestyle creates a distinctive and bold style, making the shoes a real head-turner on the streets.

The Reebok x Keith Haring Foundation range is now available at select boutiques around the world.

adidas x Show Ayanocozey

Jeremy Scott has previously injected whimsy and freshness to adidas, but now they have tapped into the creative mind of notorious Japanese music artist Show Ayanocozey for the special edition Show Ayanocozey x adidas Superstar.

The Supestar shelltoe is my favorite adidas shoe and my go to sneaker since I first got wind of Run DMC rocking it back in the 80′s. Pulling inspiration from punk and the Bosozoku (Japanese bike gangs), this sneaker is accented by the classic adidas 3-stripe in patent leather and faux studs on the heel counter.

Available in black with black studs, black with gold studs, and white with silver studs. Red on the inner lining adds a surprise pop to the black studded sneaker with the customary white rubber covers the sole and toe cap. The Show Ayanocozey x adidas Superstar is available in limited quantities at select retailers.

Vans

At Vans, some of the best collabos have sprung up this season.

Alien Workshop co-founder Mike Hill completes his Vans Syndicate partnership by utilizing the main color on his Authentics as the accent shade on this hightop release.

The Mike Hill x Vans Syndicate Sk8-Hi Boot ‘S’ is really dope because although it is a sneaker, it ingeniously does double duty as mock-toe workboot with mint & black laces for a nice finishing touch. Added bonus, every pair comes with a DIY rubber stamp sheet, with some Vans Syndicate & Alien Workshop artwork.

Available exclusively at select independent skateboard retailers, Vans Syndicate celebrates the diverse heritage of ideas, attitudes and influences that make up skateboarding’s unique culture.

Supreme is known for its great Vans collaborations, and the collection sporting the well-known New Order album cover with the floral design from 1983′s Power, Corruption & Lies is another smash.

The album art was designed by English art director Peter Saville who interpolated his idea from French artist Henri Fantin-Latour’s A Basket of Roses painting. All of them are brilliant, but I’ll be trying to scoop up the classic lace-up Eras for the warm summery days ahead.

French fashion label Kenzo is back again at Vans with their sixth collection of Vans lowtops.  These memorable patterns with the hottest shoe trends this Spring include a fresh take on leopard, florals and rosettes. Available at Kenzo stores, Kenzo.com and at select retail partners.

Let’s face it, collaborations are here to stay, so we’ll just be back to see what’s next!

How will these partnerships and others like them do?

The S Factor

The S Factor

by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

The S’s Have It as the end of May kicks off our head to toe style guide with a lot of fun stuff that we just can’t get enough of.

Great finds for your little vacay or weekend trip that will keep you looking super cool and feeling oh-so good at a fine price, no matter where or how you summer.

Shades

Hey Ladies, Aviator sunglasses by Michael Kors  gets you to soak up the sun and be made in the shade with his fun and vibrant Aviators.

These sleek frames deviate from the classic aviator style that’s whimsical, playful, and retro-chic now in a rainbow of not-so classic hues. And you can’t beat this— at $99, you’re not skimping on fierceness while bleeding your wallet.

Shorts

For the guys, shorts have really become short again especially if you are so tired of the typical board short, cargo or usually knee-length shorts. Two silhouettes standout for summer: the short shorts and the harem short.

At Zara and Kokon To Zai, the harem short takes center stage by keeping it relaxed, cool, and fun. Something different that will get you noticed anywhere you go.

At TopMan, the short shorts are the latest trend to let you stand out from the crowd in a more tailored, micro fit that’s made to be worn well above the knee while at Chubbies, a San Francisco-based company that are proud of their highest standards for shorts excellence with their comfy, soft, radical shorts for men.

Swimwear

You can take a tropical journey as Brazil is the muse for a collection at Macy’s, with two swimsuits that are inspired by the beaches of Brasil!

The A.B.S. multi-colored animal print bikini has distinctive hardware, adds tropical appeal, and will make any surfside into a wild safari.

You can add Brasilian-inspired sizzle to your beach look with the Despi sequined, mosaic-printed halter bikini top and bottom!

Sneakers

At Adidas, the essential summer slip-on is the sneaker with pops of color to brighten things up. With classic takes of their running shoes from the 1970′s and 80′s that stay true to the original, but give you an updated and way cool retro feel in fresh new colors. It’s just the kind of sneaker to pimp your style.

It’ll renew and refresh, and reveal fresh skin, as well as, reduce the appearance of uneven tone  and age spots by inhibiting excess melanin production and balancing skin.

A rejuvenating blend of seven essential oils including ylang ylang, palmarosa, neroli, linden blossom, lavender and jasmine helps to exfoliate and revitalize the skin while stimulating cell renewal, increasing the rate of cell turnover and reducing dryness. Sea algae detoxifies by drawing out impurities, stimulates skin’s natural healing abilities, nourishes, protects and improves skin’s elasticity, leaving it silky, smooth and younger looking. Oat beta glucan acts as a humectant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agent and forms a protective barrier against pollutants and environmental irritants. Aloe vera leaf juice provides a secondary protective layer, stimulating healing and encouraging the growth of new tissue.

A Perfect World UV Protector SPF 35, 1.4 fl. oz / $27.50

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is paramount for keeping it looking youthful, smooth, and radiant. Look for multi-action, antioxidant-rich ingredients that help to boost the effectiveness of your sunscreen. Antioxidants play a role in mitigating sun damage by reducing free radicals and skin inflammation that sun exposure generates.

So, try Origins A Perfect World SPF 35 UV Face Protector with White Tea, which is a lightweight, broad spectrum sunscreen loaded with powerful antioxidants White Tea, Maritime Pine, Resveratrol, Arabidopsis Thaliana Extract and Wheat Germ.

When Diamonds and Bling Are A Girl’s Best Friend!

When Diamonds and Bling Are A Girl’s Best Friend!

by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor at MOCA at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood

Elizabeth Taylor had a legendary and amazing collection of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, and rubies.

Her jewelry is one of the greatest private collections in the world, with gorgeous pieces by such leading jewelers as Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, Chopard, David Webb, Gerard, JAR, Ruser, Schlumberger, Tiffany, and Van Cleef & Arpels.

After an international, limited multi-city tour, Elizabeth Taylor’s bling and other treasures (aka The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor) will culminate in an auction in the next few days at Christie’s New York.

The jewelry up for auction includes La Peregrina, a necklace of rubies, diamonds and a pearl dating to the 16th century, and the so-called Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, which is a 33.19 carat rectangular cut diamond ring. Both were presents from her husband Richard Burton. A Cartier ruby and diamond bracelet, earrings and necklace from Taylor’s third husband, Mike Todd, will also be for sale, as will a pear-shaped 16.98 carat diamond ring that was a gift from Michael Jackson.

Diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies are some of her favorite bling!

Chanel Ball Gown & Cape

Among the collection, one of my favorites from the exhibition is a one-of-a-kind, couture ball gown. The Chanel silver and ivory gown with gossamer cape (which also includes shoes and matching clutch purse for the auction, but not included with the MOCA exhibit) was designed by acclaimed, modernist French women’s designer Coco Chanel. Elizabeth Taylor wore this ensemble to the Royal Film screening of her and Richard Burton’s The Taming of the Shrew in London in 1967.

Also up for auction are 400 pieces of haute couture that include outfits, handbags, vintage costume jewelry, shoes and belts that Taylor owned and were created by Valentino, Givenchy, Halston, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Hermès, Fendi, Stavropoulous, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Paco Rabanne, Gaultier, Ferre, Tiziani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Prada also will be sold.

An autographed Michael Jackson photo to Taylor makes it to the auction block

68 of Ms. Taylor’s most iconic fashions will be presented in a black-tie Evening Sale of her haute couture collection on December 14th, followed by 326 additional items on December 15 of her other fashions and accessories. Fine arts, paintings by Andy Warhol & David Hockney, furniture and film memorabilia (including her scripts, movie posters, and her two Best Acting Oscars) will also be on auction, and the sale of her vast, outstanding jewelry collection will precede the fashion and accessories auction, starting today December 13th.

In her book, My Love Affair with Jewelry, Elizabeth wrote “I’m fortunate to have some very important pieces of jewelry. I don’t believe I own any of the pieces. I believe that I am their custodian, here to enjoy them, to give them the best treatment in the world, to watch after their safety, and to love them.” She also wrote, “As I look at some of my jewels I realize what a very lucky girl I am.”

Diamonds and Bling are truly a girl’s best friend, and Elizabeth Taylor had some of the world’s best!

Me with Elizabeth Taylor's Oscar for the brilliant verbal sparfest that is Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Make no mistake, The Alternative Hair Show is the real hair battle spectacular!

The 29th Annual Alternative Hair Show in Moscow’s Kremlin wigged out with the most masterful, fierce, wacky, and innovative tresses to hit the runway.

It’s an incredible show that mixes hair, performance, music, and fashion that stuns and inspires audiences around the world.

Not only is it a display for drama and the most hair-raising styles as an art form, The Alternative Hair Show promotes awareness and raises money for research and people with leukemia and lymphoma.

This year’s theme was called Illusion, and the participating hair teams had been asked to use this concept for their shows, and certainly they showed us their creativity and flair for the flashy.

Design by A-Twins of Hungary. Photo by Sergei Chirikov

Check out video scenes from some of the hair hopper styling teams:

Some of the standouts this year were by the teams of Mario Krankl, Carlo Bay, Mone, Saco, Persona Lab, Dream Team Dolores, Sanrizz, TIGI, and Klaus Peter Ochs.

If you missed you the show in Moscow, the next Alternative Hair Show lands in London at the Royal Albert Hall on October 16th.

Dirndl Queen

Dirndl Queen

Isn’t this how German women are perceived in the deep forests of middle land around the world? Well, right now, as we speak, myth turns reality once a year  in the Lederhosen motherland Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

I am talking about the infamous Oktoberfest, this huge fair where people from all over the world eat enormous amounts of grilled pork or, mostly and, drink  gallons of beer until they wind up half dead in a red cross tent.   Though you, as an avid Tangerine Reader,  are not part of ‘that’ crowd, I know. Instead you would try to sneak into one of the few very  exclusive and highly secured V.I.P. tents like  the Käfer one to drink champagne and not eat at all!

How will you get in, if you are not a celebrity you ask? Well, you gotta work your cleavage and what better way, if not the only way to feature bossom than in a Dirndl.  Some cliche images to cater to your mainstream dark side before we enter the glamorous world of Dirndls.

Dames do dirndls  differently and it goes something  like this:

The Grande Dame of Dirndl Design undoubtedly is Lola Paltinger. From Barbie to Paris Hilton, everybody who is anybody, wears her creations. She has different lines like Happy Heidi or Lollipop & Alpenrock.

She  even pimps  top strollers like  Bugaboo or Kult bottles from Sigg.

Dirndlherz is another  label that mixes modern elements an colors with classic cuts. I love the generous use of black! It comes as no surprise that the Hot Dog Dress  on the right was sold out in  seconds (though the shoes are wrong).

I very much adore the creations of Dirndl-Africaine. I thinks it’s fantastic how these two sisters, who grew up in Kamerun,  mix original African patterns with traditional Dirndl design;  just one great crossover.

Daniel Hiller ‘ s jewelry pairs  craftsmanship with childlike, fun sujets! The gold Brezel is his signature piece; the Brezel is a traditional Bavarian snack equally famous in New York. The grilled chicken (called Hendl in Bavaria) rocks!

And there are more  Dirndls; fresh and short  in your typical country color schemes like these  affordable ones from Wenger and Country Line

or long and elegant evening ones from  Sportalm which -as you can see- has a modern  and sexy touch to their Dirndls  as well….

More  accessories…   these cute felt bags from Ähre & Korn have great names, like gunslinger, amore nero or  bonded whiskey (€ 40).

Ophelia Blaimer does gorgeous bridal wear,  Schmitt und Schäfer serves Couture and  Silk  and Pearls is also known for their  beautiful work. There is a Dirndl for almost all walks of live, from common to couture.

Before I go I want to show you something of which I am uncertain whether or not i should think of it as cool? Bare with me: Initially it is about the hats, lost innocence and dirndl gypsy, made by dirndlpunk (love the name), but what about the ‘choker’?  Judging from her facial expression on the right, she seems slightly tortured. Overall though, I guess it’s o.k. in a Lady Gaga kinda way (there’s a rhyme right there) but remember, you do need a long neck in order to wear two rows of braids…

Last, the ultimate  accessory:  a man. This one is decked out in Boss Black from head to toe.

You know there is so much more in terms of complete get ups;  stockings, hair dos (braids mainly), lingerie, entire looks can fill pages over pages but I didn’t want to go overboard. So consider this a sneak peak into the unique world of Dirndls.

Servus (bye), your Dirndl queen of hearts

The Men All Pause

The Men All Pause

by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

London Fashion Week is in full bloom this week and the men took center stage yesterday with the collections for Spring 2012 from a few of the new and established design darlings.

designer Lou Dalton

Lou Dalton

If you reference Morrissey and the Smiths to describe your signature guy as “This Charming Man” then you’ve already won me over big time! Lou stamps her oh-so-British sportswear collection with a twist and mostly in black, another plus plus!

Her inspiration for the spring 2012 collection was from the play “The Pitmen Painters, the UK Miners’ Strike of 1984-1985, and Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake” and can be seen in the trousers, cargo shorts, and jackets. Other colors on the palette include, navy, camel, and cream.

J.W. Anderson

J.W. Anderson

J.W. Anderson believes things can be borrowed from a man to a woman and from a woman to a man, and his inspirations for this collection are a confident and stripped back look underpinned by the use of artisan techniques mixed with modern technical fabrics, and also influenced by the work of American artist Robert Rauschenberg.

He plays with color, bold prints, and futuristic & geometric shapes on sleeveless shirts, narrow trousers, mesh shorts, jersey tops, and fitted knits and cardigans that double as bottoms.

The collection of J.W. Anderson

KTZ: Kokon To Zai

Kokon To Zai aka KTZ is a collaboration of three designers: Koji Maruyama, Sasko Bezovski and Marjan Pejoski. They are the collective behind the retail network of cult stores Kokon to Zai, combining music and fashion that’s based in London and Paris.

KTZ thinks of themselves as a tribe of people who think a little differently and this collection has bold, colorful pieces with African tribal influences mixed with black to share their multicultural & layered style and bright-eyed vision to the world.

KTZ: Kokon To Zai

what do you do on top?

what do you do on top?

what do you do on top?

I am pretty sure that you are riding the bike for both, health and environment, but do you ride safely? I agree, there are tons of hidious helmets out there which you are embarrassed to be seen with so you take the risk and wear nothing on top.    Now you can have both, style and safety:

Take a look at the following and note one of my favoureds: Yakkay from Denmark, who just launched in the US. These fabric covered helmets have a mod quality to them and patterns are perfect for fall.

London based Sawako Furuno rocks my little bike world… I am immediately thrown into a clean pool of japanese design brilliance and now look at this: a daring leopard helmet. As a gentleman you might prefer the crocodile one!

Perhaps you would like to work a TOP GUN look this Fall? Then try Diesel Mowie helmet,  a collaboration of  Diesel Design Team and AVG? Maybe a bit much for Madison Avenue ($215) ?

In terms of coolness I love the Hardnutz Chrome helmet. The chrome finish will increase your visibility in traffic and double up as mirror to fix your face or cruise backwards. Let’s keep shining: At Bobbin Bicycles you can find a gold helmet that is too sexy for words (also available in silver).

The ultimate stunner at Bobbin clearly is  Mr. Ben’ Bowler,  made by Moody &  Farrell! In case you are channeling  charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge. Surely you’ll have the streets all to yourself, ha ha…

Check out this futuristic design, a foldable helmet named beetle Cycle designed by Paul Loury.

Another french design Wunder is Jerome Coste with his Les Ateliers Ruby helmet out of carbon fiber shell, genuine Nappa Lambskin and burgundy patted interior. They come with three visors of different tints. Colette in Paris used to carry those in limited editions.

Kevin Goulip designed a cork helmet which has a clean WW2 look, whereas

Julien Bergignat  took inspiration from the Amadillo to create the lightweight recyclable  Tattoo helmet.

I am sure you all know nutcase, an American helmet manufacturer. Superstar, Daisy Stripe and Stars and Stripes rock. In summer I would totally wear the Watermelon from the gen2 collection and if you want your kids to match go check out the little nutty line…you can have a mini.me watermelon.

Then there is Bell, another well known company. They teamed up with Paul Frank to jazz up kids helmets. Well done!

The poc receptor+ is the only helmet worldwide that incorporates three different norms and  can therefore be used for cycling, skiing, skating and wake boarding.

By the way, a great site for style is the UK shop cyclechic. They carry some of the cool brands like Sawako Furuno and Yakkay.

I leave you with my all time favored from Sweden (to take our minds off from the brothel visiting King)…the Airbag from Hövding! It totally reminds me of my mother in the 70ies when she ran around the house with curlers blow drying her hair with exactly this helmet on!

I am off riding  with scissors….

by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

You better hurry, it’s a mod, mod, mod world now with the proliferation of colorful zigzags and swirly patterns with the cheap chic collection of Missoni which launches tomorrow for a very limited run at Target.

Since 1953, Missoni has been acclaimed worldwide for its unique knitwear in eclectic mix-and-match patterns, colors and textures. Known for its fashion and luxury goods, Missoni has created many collections sold at 37 freestanding boutiques, leading department stores and retailers around the world.

Although Missoni is well known for its textiles and prints in clothing, I’m much more excited about the home furnishings collection (including bedding, dinnerware, stationery and décor) available in the same colorful patterns and at very cool, moderate prices ( $12.99 for towels, rugs and pillow $29.99, and dishes from $2.99-$19.99)!

Missoni for Target collection is at prices ranging from $2.99 to $399.99, with most items less than $40.

I’ll also probably scoop up the bedding set, the expresso/coffee mug set, and maybe a piece or two in the men’s collection (although press images from that collection were very limited at time of this publication), and the bike, which I’ll snap up and ride up in style at Burning Man next year!

Only available from Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011 at all Target stores and Target.com.

SPOERRY 1866

SPOERRY 1866

Spoerry 1866, Zeitgeist Redefined

What do Chanel, Queen Victoria, James Bond, the Duke of Windsor, and Louis Vuitton all have in common? The answer later …

This time around, back in July, I wasn’t at all  interested in the runway shows  at  Berlin Fashion Week so instead I chose to  visit one of the three Trade Shows, Premium.  Dizzy from mainstream fashion mediocrity I  came to my senses in a simple space, when  seeing a small collection for men which felt  like stranding on an island of good taste and understatement. Naturally I was  excited to meet the force behind Spoerry 1866, Product Manager Christoph Irnich, who took some time to talk to me about the company and the clothes.

Spoerry 1866 has been the worlds renown supplier of yarn to the luxury segment of the textile industry from day one. Day one, that is the year 1866, when the Spoerry brothers set up a spinning plant in Flums, a small village in the rural valley of Switzerland. Spoerry 1866 is producing the finest, richest and most expensive thread in the world. Sea Island Cotton builds the fundament of their yarn. In addition, the company has been using Vikuna, Cashmere ,Silk or Wool to enrich the raw cotton material according to their customer requests.

Coming from a long line of adventurers (the great grandfather of Mr. Spoerry would travel with his hot-air balloon over Egypt and South America, another flew his own plane, then there was a Spoerry who raced against Steve McQueen in the seventies) Peter Spoerry, who runs the company in

fifth generation, continuous the family tradition. His keen knowledge of the production side based on over 140 years of experience paired with great resources plus his collaboration with leading craftsmen in Italy and Switzerland made the launch of Spoerry 1866 Men’s line two years ago come very natural. His decision, to first introduce his current collection in Kingston during Jamaica

Fashion week back in June was no accident either. Together with local farmers, Mr. Spoerry owns a plantation -that also treats the cotton- in Jamaica (as well as in Barbados) and showing the clothes there was like paying tribute to the homeland, like going back to the roots!

What I saw in Berlin was a small and exclusive line of about 35 pieces of basic Men’ s wear. Colors mostly navy and white… You find a traditional gentlemen spirit  paired with a taste for luxury and great ease in those  clothes.  So I wondered just who would wear Spoerry  1866′ s accoutrement on & off screen?     Dickie Greenleaf  for instance or let’s say, George Falconer on the  weekend, definitely Jay Gatsby, both Danny Ocean and  George Clooney , then there is the ever so stylish Patrick  Bateman, David Bowie,Russell Simmons, Kayne West,   Puff Daddy in Saint Tropez.   You get the picture?

On that note; remember my question? Here is your answer: Sea Island Cotton. According to Ian Fleming, James Bond’s shirts were made of fine Sea Island Cotton, Queen Victoria’s handkerchiefs, the former King Edward VIII only wore Sea Island Cotton shirts and nowadays luxury brands like Tom Ford, Vuitton and Chanel -to name a few- all use Sea Island Cotton in their garments.

Sea Island cotton (Gossypium barbadense) grows in the West Indies; Barbados and Jamaica, because the climate there is perfect. But what makes it so exclusive? For one, the answer lies in its extremely long staples (1.5 to 2.5 inches, 35 to 60 mm) Then there is the silky shine, the texture with the softness of cashmere, as well as its durability, long wear and almost no shedding. Beware though, Sea Island Cotton is not a trade mark. Only after WISICA, the West Indian Sea Cotton Association, certifies the cotton with a numbered hologram, you know you have the real deal.

Yearly harvest allows very limited production which makes Sea Island Cotton such a rare commodity. Demands are high and with that, so is the price.

By the way, appropriately  enough Spoerry 1866 will be  introducing their line during NY  Fashion Week in a small and  intimate gathering at Core … you  might just read about it in Vanity  Fair (I heard George Wayne fell  in love with the clothes in  Jamaica) and here of course, as  our editor at large will have the exclusive rights to cover this party… Cheers to quality, taste and tradition!

Great Scott!

Great Scott!

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

the designer Jeremy Scott

With New York Fashion Week upon us in less than two weeks, we’re anticipating some brilliant collections especially from the likes of Jeremy Scott, the edgy American designer and rising star who is taking the world runway by storm with his fierceness.

Jeremy Scott has a body of work that exemplifies the essence and sparkle of Keith Haring and Steven Sprouse with a smidgeon of the drama of Gaultier, McQueen, Westwood, Galliano and Thierry Mugler— and those are extremely gigantic and staggering shoes to fill.

His use of iconic Pop cultural references has radiated with his audience and has underlined his dashing and daring style. For his very own signature ready to wear line, his creations are often conceptual, well constructed, and humorously emblazoned with social commentary. He believes that you should have fun with fashion and his designs mimic that mantra with a proud, indie, emo-punk, freak flag-waving spirit. His clothing is notorious for its wit, playfulness, irony and eccentricity.

Whether you love him or hate him, one thing for certain is Jeremy is also able to inject a celebrated sportswear brand like Adidas or popular Swiss timekeeper Swatch with some freshness and whimsy.

Jeremy Scott: runway + adidas + swatch

Jeremy’s other notable designer collaborations include Christian Louboutin, Linda Farrow, Longchamp, Swarovski, and Ksubi. He has draped every major music diva from Madonna to Bjork, Lady Gaga to Kelis and most rock starlets in between.

And here’s the pièce de résistance, Karl Lagerfeld has even gone on to say that he envisions Jeremy as his successor at Chanel…wow, now that’s even more impressive!

…Introducing The New Leading Man for Summer

…Introducing The New Leading Man for Summer

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

Always searching for the perfect shirt, the new and improved chino, the light and sexy chambray, some comfy blue denim, or the season’s best swimsuit?
Why not just mix up your wardrobe with styles from different cultures and times to create a sort of modern day celebration of a guy’s style…Introducing The New Leading Man for Summer.

A graphic Southwest-inspired tank by Obey

Native prints are the new plaid. Whether you find inspiration from classic Americana of an indian or cowboy, influences from the Southwest, Aztec, Mayan or Inca, or the tropical mountain colors and culture of Machu Picchu, and the ocean blue prints of the Pacific and Polynesia, this is a welcome trend for us guys.

Focus on gathering specific native- or ethnic-inspired pieces to serve as a foundation to work off of like a vintage Batik or Aztec print shirt, a braided leather belt, a classic Apache or Navajo print blazer, and a Mayan patterned bag. A turquoise stone neckpiece or ring,  maybe even a silver bolo tie, and Mexican or Brazilian huarache sandals are all just some of the best ways to approach this trend.

Just remember not to wear everything at once to keep this look unfussy and simplistic.

Not your typical island floral fare, no one does Hawaiian better this season than Dolce & Gabbana with a modern take on a classic Hawaiian print to get you in a tropical state of mind. Just pair it with some chinos or dress it up with black.

Preppy has been back at the forefront of men’s fashion for quite some time now, but it’s different now, more a statement of comfort and style by a forward-thinking man. You don’t have to be bow-tied, argyled or striped socked, oxfords and vested, and pocket squared-up for every single look.

Keep it clean, crisp, simple and fun– a button down shirt with rolled up sleeves, a bold color tee or printed polo, shorts with a print of some kind, and sockless loafers, or maybe a scarf or sweater over your shoulder.

In fact, even if you’re not on a dock, the boat or deck shoe is still the perfect summer slip-on to complete your look, and you should consider the shirts you wear with your shorts. A pattern down below pairs better with a solid on top, while a solid bottom allows you to mix in a pattern or a bright hue (to color-block) on top. All great fun in the modern remake of an American classic look.

Chain Reaction

Chain Reaction

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

Move over hipster bow tie, super-sized necklaces, striped suspenders, and the chunky statement ring—what’s hot and trending now is an eclectic new way to wear metal…as a harness!

No longer your standard bondage gear of the leather and S&M culture, jewelry designers are dressing up apparel with this fresh accessory that’s been seen at the clubs, on the streets and on runways.

Armor Jewelry's Aeon Body Chain

The body chain (also called a wraparound or body necklace) or harness is usually worn over a tee, or draped on a shirt or dress, or under clothing. Not a shy guy here, but I think a body necklace looks super-good on bare skin too.

It’s can sometimes be tricky to put on, but it’s the new way to showcase your style with body jewelry and express yourself as a modern fashion warrior (no battlescars needed!)

Some of the hottest body chain designers find inspiration and designs from architecture, medieval times, boundless imagination, ethnic traditions, and new takes on classic clothing & styles. These designers causing a chain reaction and making a name for themselves using innovative design and craftsmanship include Armor Jewelry, Bliss Lau, Cecilia De Bucourt, Brook & Lyn, and Luv AJ to name just a few.

Bliss Lau is my favorite harness designer because she creates for both women and men. Her bolero-inspired piece can be worn in a few different ways: as a vest, necklace, cape, around wrist or as a chain. She also uses solid brass plated chains with different finishes and hand-stitched leather to create stunning, unique pieces like the Diamond Dress which was influenced by the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

So, no matter whether you’re chic, stylista or a confident jeans and tee kind of guy (or somewhere in between), you can unleash your personal style and make an impression in some super-cool body armor.

The Cheap Chic of Jean Paul Gaultier

The Cheap Chic of Jean Paul Gaultier

by Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

Hot on the heels of other designer collections for Target like Anna Sui and Alexander McQueen, now comes celebrated French designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

As part of Target’s Designer Collaborations, a special program that features well-established designers who draw inspiration from a collaborative partner, muse or creative element, the exclusive Jean Paul Gaultier for Target collection pays tribute to the American woman – celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture.

Jean Paul Gauliter with model Agyness Deyn

Jean Paul Gaultier with model Agyness Deyn

Jean Paul Gaultier is legendary for his rebellious and innovative designs and his popularity comes partially from the risks that he takes in his designs and theatrical shows. By blending  unconventional use of materials, edgy & androgynous styles,  along with the pulse of London and New York street wear into designer fashion, Gaultier turned the classic idea of Parisian chic on its head with his punk, pop, and rock sensibilities.

Gaultier’s story of success is a classic tale of passion, longevity, and talent. At the age of 18, with no previous formal training, he was hired as a design assistant for Pierre Cardin in Paris after sending his promising sketches to the designer in the mail. Several years later, after working at the design houses of Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou, Gaultier launched his first womenswear collection in Paris. Early on, he introduced elements that have remained Gaultier signatures, such as the nautical navy-and-white striped Breton-inspired  tops and the reconstructed trench coat.

Cone bra corset made famous by Madonna

Cone bra corset made famous by Madonna

In the 1990′s, Gaultier became internationally known  for his provocative and structured costumes he designed for Madonna’s world tour, constructing the infamous cone bra corsets along with modern, tight black suits. His runways shows are often outrageous and soon more success followed when Gaultier presented his couture collection in 1997 which was lauded for its craftsmanship, meticulous design and exquisite attention to detail. At that time, Gaultier was one of the only designers to feature couture for men as well as women, and to showcase corsets for men. In 2003, Jean Paul became the creative director and designer at French luxury house Hermès.

The world of Jean Paul Gaultier includes womenswear, menswear, accessories, fragrance and couture for a worldwide audience. His creations and designs are favorites among a wide range of celebrities like Janet Jackson, Lady GaGa, Catherine Deneuve, Rihanna, Mickey Rourke, Kylie Minogue, Marilyn Manson, Katy Perry, and Dita Von Teese. He currently designs for three collections: his own couture and ready-to-wear lines, as well as the  clothing line for Hermès,  and luxe handbags…and now a fourth at Target for a very limited time.  His cheap and chic clothing for Target will launch on Target.com and at 250 select Target stores nationwide on March 7, 2010 and remain available through April 11, 2010.

From ingénue to rock ‘n roll, this collection celebrates women of all ages and a host of distinctive, iconic American styles. What you can find in Gaultier’s collection for Target includes a criss-cross bandage nylon dress which exudes modern glamour while a halter neck A-line dress defines old-Hollywood lady-like appeal. Women will rock n’ roll in a cropped two-tone motorcycle leather jacket with a zipper detailing that adds a tough chic topper to spring’s lightweight dresses. Hip-hop takes center stage with a fitted dress featuring suspender straps and cropped open shoulder knit tops with drawstring waist.  The season’s menswear trend shines through on a poplin black and white button-down sleeveless shirt dress with coordinating long-sleeve cropped shrug, while pinstripes find their way on paper-bag waist pants and a short-sleeve double-breasted blazer.

Lazer-cut embroidery, poplin and mesh are woven throughout the collection, providing rich texture on flirty silhouettes, while classic shapes get intricate details and pops of bold colors for modern flair.  Ranging in prices from $17.99 -$199.99, this line of seasonal, affordable must-haves also  includes high-waisted pants and shorts, mini skirts, strong-shoulder jackets, cropped tanks and swimwear that women everywhere will covet.

Fashion’s Big Loss: the great Alexander McQueen dead at 40

The Original Imaginarium of Gareth Pugh

The Original Imaginarium of Gareth Pugh

by Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

Designer Gareth Pugh

Designer Gareth Pugh

Gareth Pugh is a British designer based in Paris who has been taking the fashion world by storm for his over-the-big-top, sense of spectacle clothing. Some of his designs have used a variety of materials, including inflated latex, PVC, vinyl, perspex, and human hair to create a dramatic futuristic vision of fashion.

Gareth’s background in fashion design began at age 14 as the costume designer for the English National Youth Theatre. He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2003 and mounted his first London Fashion Week solo show just four years ago. He apprenticed under the tutelage of avant-garde designer Rick Owens, and it’s Owens’ wife, Michele Lamy, who eventually has become Gareth’s business partner.

He comes from the school of fashion as performance art where his collections are wearable sculptures and are often admired for their technical merit, artistic value, and creative vision. At age 28, his expressive designs are dramatic, stark, slick, simple, and steely. A master of high concept, some of the early accolades have compared him with couture geniuses Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, and Thierry Mugler.

To get a real sense of his aesthetic, he once cited the Wizard of Oz meets Predator as his design influence.  Because Gareth’s designs are theatrical and experimental, for the last few years his ascent as a fashion darling is thanks in part to his high-profile showstoppers that have caught our attention through music & style stars Kylie Minogue, Róisín Murphy, and Casey Spooner (of Fischerspooner). Marilyn Manson, Rihanna, and Lady GaGa have also been seen draped in some of his graphic and sharp looks, while superstar Beyoncé owes much of her edgier and confident Sasha Fierce persona to Gareth Pugh’s hard femininity statements, which she has donned in her Diva and Sweet Dreams videos, on a Elle magazine cover, and at MTV Europe Music Awards show.

Here are some of Gareth’s designs from his past collections:

Untitled-2a

2008 & 2009 collections

head piece and clothing from Spring 2010 collection

headpiece & vest, crochet dress, Spring 2010

As an evolving artist and designer, Gareth has moved away from his earlier eccentricities of hard lines and angles, and puffed up-pumped out abstractions to producing silhouettes with loose knitwear, more structured tailoring and using softer flowy and billowy fabrics like chiffon and ribbons. His latest garments are something people can actually wear but are still in line with his dark aesthetic and uncompromising creative vision.

His clothes can be found at Browns in London, Colette in Paris, Seven, Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman in New York. A single piece can sell for thousands of dollars, and only the most spirited, open-minded, fashion forward and assured customer are ever likely to buy and wear them.

Let’s take a look at the softer side of Gareth with his Spring 2010 men’s and women’s collections.

Gareth’s creations have trickled into other aspects of design as seen here:

Porcelain maker Nymphenburg to celebrate its 260th anniversary launched a limited edition of the world-famous Commedia Dell’Arte figures produced by the rococo sculptor, Franz Anton Bustelli. Gareth was one of sixteen internationally acclaimed fashion designers were invited to create new clothes for their favorite figure in the Commedia Dell’Arte group. Winterize It!…in Cashmere

Winterize It!…in Cashmere

Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Skincare Director

Today’s fashion spotlight is on how to winterize this season’s clothes in cashmere.

Cashmere is fine in texture, but it is also strong, and light. It’s characterized by its soft fibers and as providing a natural lightweight insulation without the bulk. The cashmere weave is clean, supple and touchable, available in way too many rich, tony hues.

Luxury finds itself in many, everyday cashmere silhouettes because it’s soft, easy, and versatile. Cashmere is so uber-comfortable, affordable and expensive all at the same time.  And, I’ll pick this any day over other wools’ scratchiness, thickness, or roughness…plus cashmere simply feels better when paired with a tee or tank underneath which is the way I like to wear it!

Cashmere sweaters, jackets and coats, pants, scarves and gloves, pajamas, pashminas, and even tracksuits are all perfect for the ice cold bite of Winter –  it’s cozy, light, and oh so warm!  A stylish way to stay toasty during the chilly months!

Banana Republic Scarf Sweater Dress

Banana Republic Heritage Dress

J. Crew Cashmere

J. Crew Hayward Coat

Three very nice, and beautifully dashing cashmere pieces comes from familiar, and popular retailers: Banana Republic J. Crew, and Macy’s:

Banana Republic has a super-cool scarf sweater dress combo called the Heritage cashmere dress. With a detachable cashmere scarf, it adds cozy style with button-tab in back to allow someone to wear the dress with or without the scarf. 100% cashmere, light gray heather color ribbed at neckline, sleeves, and hem with a straight skirt. So versatile, you can wear it alone, or over tights and leggings for a modern, chic look. It’s $198, a good price for good cashmere.

One of the finest cashmere selections is from J. Crew Collection…A double-faced A-line, deep V-neck cashmere coat with elbow sleeves that is incredibly soft, from a very old, very exclusive, family-owned mill in Italy whose specialty is cashmere—and cashmere alone. Called the Hayward coat, available in a pony-brown color at $1,299, it’s so luxe and well-constructed, it’s worth the steep price.

HeatTech by Uniqlo

HeatTech by Uniqlo

Fall and Winter is here and what better way to get warmed up than a pair of Uniqlo’s HeatTech long johns in some cool colors. No more drabby thermal underwear.  Now you can have bright yellow, neon green and a different color every day of the week.

Couple of weeks ago I bought a pair (camouflage) at the New York City Uniqlo store. They were like a pair of heaters on my legs during the last couple of cold November days.

These are not just any long johns, thermos, leggings or winter underwear.  They have heat generation, heat retention, odor control, anti-static (very important – so sick of being shocked!) and non-deforming.  I can tell you first hand that this really retains heat. Best of all they are very stylish and can be worn as outer wear (not the long johns of course).  Silky in texture but no static.

HeatTech is available in men’s and women’s style (no unisex on this one) and you can mix and match it with your outerwear with different color like purple, plum, grays.

Women’s t-shirts have camisole, sleeveless, long sleeve, short sleeve, turtle neck and leggings:

All items are $15.50 except the men’s short sleeve t-shirt which is $10.50.  There’s tons of colors to choose from.

For those of you who are not familiar with Uniqlo, they are the H & M or Top Shop of Japan with fashionable clothes at fantastic prices.  They only have a New York story for now.  Plans are in the works for expansion into wide US markets.  San Francisco and Chicago is supposed to be in the works.

You can buy HeatTech at the Uniqlo HeatTech online store or in Soho NYC.

You can’t buy other Uniqlo stuff there unfortunately but they are planning a full fledged online store very soon I hear.  Meanwhile you can view their collection on the interactive site.  WE LOVE UNIQLO!

Against all odds the Pakistan Fashion Week began after the event was reschedule twice due to security concerns.  Pakistani designers show that they are beyond the Taliban and the Burka.  The designs are diverse and surprising.

Organizers of the event wanted to send a message that even in the midst of a very difficult time that creativity will go on.  Even though there were no buyers or editors in the audience the fashion show was a success and show a solidarity among the creative community in Pakistan.

the Supermodels in 1990 by Peter Lindbergh

Some of the Supermodels in 1990 by Peter Lindbergh

The OG Supermodels are making a comeback…Christy, Linda, Naomi, Cindy, and Claudia are all back with a vengeance and proving that it’s even better the second time around!

Collectively these women sparked the era of the Supermodel in the late 80′s and in the 1990′s when they could command tens of thousands of dollars a day and even millions for a major fashion and cosmetics campaigns. They are still gracing covers for major fashion magazines, still doing stylish editorials, and still featured in major fashion and beauty campaigns and commercials.

Since the height of their fame, individually they have worked continuously throughout their careers, but as times changed and the new milillienium approached,  supermodels were being replaced by well-known entertainers like movie stars, and musical artists as celebrities and icons on the covers of fashion magazines and ad campaigns.

There have been a supermodel here (Giselle) or there (Heidi Klum), but none that had the cache and worldwide recognition of the following women. In 2009, the original supermodels have returned with some impressive new jobs and a few more notches in their careers. So let’s take a look at what these women are up to these days:

Christy Turlington, age 40, is one of the most successful supermodels. She is well-known as the face of Calvin Klein from 1987-2007.  Christy first came into prominence as a teenager when she appeared in the video of Notorious by Duran Duran in 1986. She has appeared on over 500 magazine covers and surely more to come.

She signed a multiyear contract with Maybelline, marking her return to the company that made her famous with its Maybe She’s Born With It ad campaign from 1992-1998.  Her other  major  campaigns this year include YSL, Bally, and Escada.

From fashion icon to activist, Christy Turlington has successfully created a diverse and multi-talented career as an entrepreneur, role model and spokesperson in the cosmetic, fashion, business and political worlds.

Today, she is an advocate for wellness and international aid, supporting women’s health projects and relief work across the globe. Additionally, Turlington is widely recognized as a prominent voice for yoga and a healthier way of life. Christy’s long term interest in yoga has culminated in the creation of two successful businesses – nuala, an apparel clothing line, and Sundari, an Ayurvedic skincare line – as well as the best selling book on yoga. Christy also teamed up with Puma with the launch of Mahanuala, a new collection of technical yoga-wear created as a complementary diffusion line to nuala.

In addition to French Vogue, Naomi also became the first black model to appear on the cover of Vogue UK, Vogue Japan,  and Vogue China.

A high point of Naomi’s career was in the early 1990s, when she was part of the two major “supermodel” powerhouses: the Big 6, alongside Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss, and The Trinity, alongside Turlington and Evangelista.

H&M Women's Tube $5.95

H&M Women's Tube $5.95

For today’s Friday Fashion Spotlight,  we’re featuring the extra-hot accessory and the fashion hit of this season…the Snood!

The snood, also known as a circle scarf or ring scarf is the newest in neckwear — wrap it around and wear it like a scarf, over the head for a hooded effect, and also worn in various ways. It’s a scarf that has no ends and can be doubled, tripled, be a shawl, or pulled up and over the head as a hood.

It’s versatility is what makes it all the rage right now.  Some are more hood-like, some are tube-like, while others are purposely more scarf than anything else, but they all give you an updated and more modern look than the old standard scarf and hat set.

H&M Men's Neck Tube $14.95

H&M Men's Neck Tube $14.95

What we’re digging  is the ultra-chic designs, nice variations in style, and good price points for everyone. We’re seeing rich, vibrant, and fun colors for Fall & Winter in fabrics like angora, cashmere, lambswool, rayon, cotton voile, silks, knits and wovens, and even fab faux fur and,  get this… macrame!

H&M offers the snood or as they are calling it, the neck tube in great colors and prices, as well as places like TopShop, Steve Madden, TopMan, Urban Outfitters, Macy’s, American Eagle, BeBe, Uniqlo, and American Apparel.

Not to be outdone high-end retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Burberry, and Saks Fifth Avenue all offer their versions. And because we love animals, a big shame on you and boycott to Adrienne Landau, Eric Javits, and Pologeorgis for offering renditions like rabbit, fox, and raccoon.

Cashmere hand-dyed stripe Nepali by TDM Design loop scarf $135

Cashmere hand-dyed stripe Nepali by TDM Design loop scarf $135

One of my favorite snoods is done by Nepali by TDM Design. Not only because of the luxurious cashmere, had-dyed stripes, or the excellent craftmanship, but I love the story behind Nepali by TDM Design which creates opportunities for poverty-stricken women to generate sustainable income in Nepal.

They are invested in a literacy and education campaign throughout the country. Their mission is to bring about social and economic change by allowing women to participate financially in their society…and that’s very hot and so relevant for a modern world, and what Tangerine Living is all about, living a life that is fresh, cool, and natural!

Here’s a peak at some of the latest  snoods and scarfs that I think are sweet and stylish and destined to keep you warm, and cozy on a cold day (and night):

Keep it locked here at Tangerine Living and stay tuned for my November spotlight on Neckpieces, the perfect accessory to light up your Holidays.
