Bright Lights, Big Beauty, Great Skin!

Bright Lights, Big Beauty, Great Skin!

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

I got you covered from head to (mistle)toe with a few tips to help you give good face and rev up your look while navigating through the upcoming holidays and well into Winter.

Simple, easy, and quick fixes to make you stunning and to get you glowing!

SKIN HYDRATOR

To prevent your skin from losing its luster, enliven yourself and boost & recharge your skin.  It’s essential to use a slightly rich face cream, or a facial oil to restore moisture and fortify a parched, dry, and cold-busted complexion instantly with long-lasting hydration.

Kiehl's Rosa Arctica, $60 / 1.7 oz.

Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica is that special powerhouse cream to get you through the cold, Wintery months! It delivers energy to skin allowing cellular activity to reawaken.

It simultaneously protects skin from future damage as the skin transforms to a more youthful beginning – reduced lines and wrinkles, improved firmness, and a dramatic restoration of hydration.

This skin blockbuster contains Rosa Arctica (Haberlea rhodopensis) aka regeneration flower, which is known to survive up to 31 months in a dry-out cycle, by falling into anabiosis. When proper moisture conditions are restored, it returns to life within hours and is able to bloom fully again. On skin, it works to jolt cellular vitality, stimulating skin’s own collagen and elastin production.

This rich, dense formula provides instant hydration and can be used day and night.  It is also empowered with fantastic lipids like squalane, cocoa and shea butters, and essential fatty acids such as oleic, stearic and palmatic acid to help replenish skin’s barrier.

Emulsify the cream by rubbing it between your fingers to liquefy it and increase its spreadability and absorption capabilities. It truly lasts all day, locks in moisture, and will make your skin feel moist, firmer, and rejuvenated.

ILLUMINATOR / LUMINIZER

The magic drops for me are using a luminizer or a facial oil, it’s a great way to light the skin up and emphasize glowing skin!

Illuminators and luminizers are sheer, light-reflecting liquids that enhance your skin with a dewy, incandescent, and sometimes shimmering appearance. It can be infused into your moisturizer or foundation, or used alone.

DHC Olive Virgin Oil

Applying a facial oil to the skin helps impart the glow that everyone wants—the kind that’s a healthy shine, dewy and not greasy.

Universally known as the good oil, the Flor de Aceite (the more premier & purest form of olive oil) in DHC Virgin Olive Oil is my secret finish in skincare. I’ve been using it for almost 13 years and I only use a drop of the olive oil and pat on my skin to capture the light and give me that go-to glow.

It’s simply the best and effortlessly melts into all complexions including oily without leaving any greasy residue creating luminous, light-reflecting skin. You can also add a drop to your moisturizer for some added oomph to lock in moisture and guard against moisture loss. It’s also great for repairing and healing stressed skin.

Compared to others face oils on the market at almost the double the price, DHC Olive Virgin Oil is certified organic and great quality and good value at $39 for 1 fl. oz, just remember a drop goes a long way!

Lorac Oil-Free Luminizer

Lorac Oil-Free Luminizer, $28 / .9 fl. oz

To  illuminate your face, or to highlight your cheek or brow bones, use just a smidgen of Lorac Oil-Free Luminizer in Pearl or Gold.

This 100% oil-free luminizer adds an incandescent sheen to brighten the face, providing an instant pick-me-up and immediate glow. Infused with skin beneficial ingredients like chamomile, comfrey, and aloe to calm, soothe, and hydrate the complexion.

L2 (Gold) makes medium and dark skin tones glow without looking too slick, or glaring, while L1 (Pearl) is a highlighting liquid for fair skin.

Wear it alone very sparingly, but I recommend to mix just a tiny drop with your moisturizer (or foundation) for some real, healthy-looking radiance & brightness.

Make no mistake, The Alternative Hair Show is the real hair battle spectacular!

The 29th Annual Alternative Hair Show in Moscow’s Kremlin wigged out with the most masterful, fierce, wacky, and innovative tresses to hit the runway.

It’s an incredible show that mixes hair, performance, music, and fashion that stuns and inspires audiences around the world.

Not only is it a display for drama and the most hair-raising styles as an art form, The Alternative Hair Show promotes awareness and raises money for research and people with leukemia and lymphoma.

This year’s theme was called Illusion, and the participating hair teams had been asked to use this concept for their shows, and certainly they showed us their creativity and flair for the flashy.

Design by A-Twins of Hungary. Photo by Sergei Chirikov

Check out video scenes from some of the hair hopper styling teams:

Some of the standouts this year were by the teams of Mario Krankl, Carlo Bay, Mone, Saco, Persona Lab, Dream Team Dolores, Sanrizz, TIGI, and Klaus Peter Ochs.

If you missed you the show in Moscow, the next Alternative Hair Show lands in London at the Royal Albert Hall on October 16th.

Freshen Up for Fall

Freshen Up for Fall

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

Everyone sweats, that’s just a fact of life.

Sweating is a natural body function that helps to regulate temperature during hot weather, physical activity, and exercise. Whenever we sweat, toxins that have been trapped by the skin and nearby tissues are transported outward.

While human perspiration is largely odorless, when microscopic bacteria that lives naturally on your skin mixes with sweat, they multiply quickly, often resulting in quite a distinctive scent…or as some may say, a stink.

But, whether you sweat a little, or a whole lot, you probably care less about the “why” and are more interested in the “how”…how to get rid of the funk!

There are two types of products that assist with perspiration. Antiperspirants often contain aluminum chloride, a chemical that blocks the pores to prevent and reduce sweating. The other is a deodorant. While deodorants do not prevent sweating, they mask the smell of bacteria on your skin really well and just as effectively without blocking the pores.

I am more of a proponent for deodorants and body sprays than antiperspirants, as the body sweats for a reason, and is an essential function of the healthy human body to cleanse itself of toxins.

Here’s the 10 best deodorants and tools to help keep you fresh and free from odor with sniff-worthy scents, great protection, indomitable essential oils, and crisp fragrances with choice ingredients free from parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, or artificial colors.

1- Tom’s Of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant Stick

A regular staple of a legion of loyal followers myself included, Tom’s of Maine was one of the first in the natural care market, and is still a force to be reckoned with. I’ve used their deodorant for many, many years.

It’s all-powerful formula uses Hops which inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria, and Zinc Ricinoleate (sourced from castor beans and zinc) is known to help trap odor molecules and absorb bad smells, while its natural fragrances of essential oils and blends helps to mask odor.

Added features: With various fresh scents, standouts include Calendula, and the new Mountain Spring and Beautiful Earth. It glides on well without stickiness or a messy residue…and its use of natural fragrance carriers of glycerin and coconut oil help to enhance the stick. 2.25 oz. / $4.99. Available at Tom’s Of Maine and most national market retailers.

2- Kiss My Face Liquid Rock/ Active Life Stick in Cucumber Green Tea

I love this mainly because of the cucumber and green tea fusion that sets it apart from most other deodorants and sprays, and also for it’s liquid mineral crystal roll-on, and it’s “I can be confident all day!” stick.

Other time tested botanicals of Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Grapefruit, Coriander, and Aloe in combination with effective odor absorbing ingredients of Hops and Zinc Ricinoleate work outrageously well in this naturally scented, cooling formula in the Active Life Stick. The Liquid Rock utilizes Willow Bark and Lichen extracts for its effective and natural odor protection.

Active Life Stick 2.48 oz / $5.99 and Liquid Rock Roll Om 3 fl oz. / $5.99 at Kiss My Face and most national market retailers

3- Origins Totally Pure Deodorant

I’ve rotated this deodorant on those days after I have worked out at the gym or when I want to switch it up and smell/feel different. Origins’ deodorant kicks some serious butt with the vim of Organic Vinegar (used in countless folk recipes for its pure cleaning abilities) that purifies.

100% Organic essential oil blend including Clove Oil (long known for its purifying benefits), Organic Lemon, Organic Ylang Ylang, Organic Lavender, Organic Mandarin, Organic Patchouli, Organic Palmorosa, Organic Ginger help keep you with showery-fresh smell and feeling. Organic White Willow Bark and Lavender Alcohol blend helps protect the purity of this product and control odor.

Certified organic, and one kind is ideal for both men and women. 3.4 fl. oz./ $15 and available at Origins

4- DHC Body Cleansing Sheets

Another tried and true favorite of mine whenever I am on the go, or in the middle of the day and need to freshen up, I just reach for this and wipe away the sweat and dirt from my body, or to neutralize any smells under my arms, and to gently cleanse and cool my skin.

Made with Perilla extract, Cucumber, and Aloe to help condition, nourish, soothe and cool the skin.

Bonus features, it’s not too overly saturated and wet like other towelettes and cleansing sheets…it’s also portable, fast and easy, and a fantastic refresher that works every time!

DHC also offers Body Cleansing Sheet Powder for those wanting to swipe away sweat, grit and stickiness, leaving a silky powdery feel without any messy residues for a baby-soft finish.

Body Cleansing Sheets at DHC 20 sheets / $5

5- Carol’s Daughter Orange Ambrosia Dry Oil Mist

This body fragrance indulges your love of delightful citrus scents while pampering your skin with a veil of moisture.

You will smell great and give your skin a silky-soft glow. First, you’ll notice the Moro blood orange, like a fresh orange peel, but then you’ll detect a splash of mimosa from Mandarin, Grapefruit, and also Key Lime with a hint of woodiness.

Spray all over your body and massage into skin, even under your arms to celebrate the best of spring and summer aromas all year long.

It’s added features include Açai Berry Extract, a super antioxidant to protect your skin from environmental agers, and the ultra-hydrating Shea butter. Plus, it’s light enough to spray on whenever needed as a refresher. 4 fl. oz / $21, available at Carol’s Daughter and HSN.

6-  Dr Hauschka Deodorant Fresh

This long-lasting cream roll on with a citrus scent from pure essential oils absorbs odors without clogging pores.

A great alternative to sticks and roll-on and sensitive underarm areas without having to apply pressure. 4 fl. oz. / $8.75 at Aubrey Organics

Mad for Missoni

Mad for Missoni

by Hadrian Miguel, Life & Style Director

You better hurry, it’s a mod, mod, mod world now with the proliferation of colorful zigzags and swirly patterns with the cheap chic collection of Missoni which launches tomorrow for a very limited run at Target.

Since 1953, Missoni has been acclaimed worldwide for its unique knitwear in eclectic mix-and-match patterns, colors and textures. Known for its fashion and luxury goods, Missoni has created many collections sold at 37 freestanding boutiques, leading department stores and retailers around the world.

Although Missoni is well known for its textiles and prints in clothing, I’m much more excited about the home furnishings collection (including bedding, dinnerware, stationery and décor) available in the same colorful patterns and at very cool, moderate prices ( $12.99 for towels, rugs and pillow $29.99, and dishes from $2.99-$19.99)!

Missoni for Target collection is at prices ranging from $2.99 to $399.99, with most items less than $40.

I’ll also probably scoop up the bedding set, the expresso/coffee mug set, and maybe a piece or two in the men’s collection (although press images from that collection were very limited at time of this publication), and the bike, which I’ll snap up and ride up in style at Burning Man next year!

Only available from Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011 at all Target stores and Target.com.

Tangerine Living Fall 2011 Beauty Report

Tangerine Living Fall 2011 Beauty Report

Fall is always an exciting time in fashion and beauty. You get to switch it up in the transition between seasons and try new colors which is an easy way to implement some change into your look. Fall fashion leads the way and beauty follows so here are some easy ways to integrate the trends to pay attention to for Fall- with a few product recommendations to help you get the looks.

NATURAL FACE

The neutral, warm, nude face. With a focus on flawless skin, caramel, sienna, taupe, nude, beige and brown are the basis for the color palette on eyes, cheeks and lips. The overall look is muted and mostly bare.

Dick Page chose this look for Michael Kors…..

Charlotte Tilbury designed this look for Chloe….

CHEEK FLUSH

Francoise Nars designed a unique flushed cheek for Marc Jacobs. Whether you rock the low blended look that he created or the always classic “doll cheek” flush focused on the center of the apples of the cheek- it’s a great way to showcase a fresh, youthful, pop of color.  I love a bright pink cheek. I always turn to Nars Desire for powder blush and for creme I really love Laura Mercier Creme Cheek Colour in Oleander. Layer the powder over creme and you’ll have a bright flush that lasts.

Nars Desire Blush….

Laura Mercier Creme Cheek Colour in Oleander….

BOLD LIP

There was a bevy of reds and wines on the runway for Fall 2011.  Pat McGrath custom blended a blackened burgundy for Gucci. I always love a classic bright red like Mac’s Ruby Woo which was Lucia Pieroni’s choice for Giles, or Chanel’s Rouge Allure lipstick in Entertainment- which Peter Philips used on his models for Jil Sander….

Giles….

Ruby Woo by Mac….

Jil Sander….

I am also loving the deep jewel tone aubergines like Nars Train Bleu….

METALLIC EYES

I love Laura Mercier Sequin Eye Colour in Sterling and Chanel Illusoire. You’ll see a lot of graphic lines with a shimmery silver gray wash blended through it. Chanel showed a beautiful metallic eye for Fall 2011….

BOLD BROWS

Alexander Wang chose a bold brow statement for his Fall 2011 collection. So did Stephane Marais when he designed the look for Jean Paul Gaultier. You’ll want to fill yours in if they are sparse and Brow Control by Brow Diva can help keep them perfectly groomed.

Alexander Wang…..

Jean Paul Gaultier……..

Brow Diva Brow Control……..

NEUTRAL NAILS

Fall 2011 nail trends lean towards neutrals…my personal favorites are Glamour Purse and Case Study both from Essie’s Carry On Fall 2011 Collection.

Glamour Purse….

Case Study….

UNDONE HAIR

Fall 2011 hair trends are all about natural, loose, romantic hair. Whether it’s worn up or down-the look is undone, deconstructed, casual, incidental. Even if it is retro inspired- it is not refined. If it’s a ponytail- it’s looser and more casual…. not perfect. I particularly loved the hair at Rodarte which I felt beautifully encompassed this whole mood…..

Here’s our top picks of best beauty products to save your skin and get your swimsuit body ready for the season and all of Summer’s sunny splendor.

#1 Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream

Often described as an amazing multi-tasking non-greasy wonder hydrator, Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream can be used for everything including dehydrated, dry, damaged skin, to soothing scars, to creating a dewy finish for your complexion, as a cheek highlighter, as an overnight eye treatment, or as an immensely hydrating lip balm.

A little goes a long way, but you can also use it on your face as a night moisturizer and eye cream, as a split end mender, hair conditioner and defrizzer, as a stretch mark prevention regimen. I can go on and on…it’s also a soothing redness reducer, helps to even heal bruises and blemishes, as a rejuvenating nail and cuticle conditioner, to smooth rough areas like elbows and knees, and helps with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

Everyone asks me about my glowing skin…well, it’s a tiny bit of this product (and also DHC’s Olive Virgin Oil) that makes my skin smooth and radiant. Egyptian Magic’s cream is an amazing, one stop multi-functional balm. It keeps skin luminous and hydrated, and I never ever leave home without it!

#2 Figs & Rouge 100% Organic Balm

Figs & Rouge has its own version of a multi-purpose balm, with 7 versions to choose from, but our faves are Coco Vanilla (a blend of Cocoa Seed, Sunflower oil, & Vanilla), and also Pomegranate (a mix of Pomegranate & Grapefruit oils).

Not only can Figs & Rouge 100% Organic balms be used on your lips and any dry skin dilemma, but it’s also great as a cleanser to remove dirt and impurities, as an intensive moisture boost for dry and flaky skin emergencies, as a fragrance just apply to pulse points on your body, as a moisturizer it keeps cuticle and nails in silky soft condition, and for hair styling needs just apply with fingers to tresses for immense texture and shine.

#3 Bakel Oxyregen Regenerating Cream

Drench your parched, and sun-dried skin with 10 clinically-tested ingredients, and no nasty additives, Bakel Oxyregen Regenerating Cream is an innovative and wondrous moisturizer that works to stimulate cellular oxygenation with Saccharomyces Lysate, a biotechnological oxidizing yeast that stimulates cellular oxygenation and activates the natural ability of the skin to regenerate itself.

Extracts of olive, jojoba and avocado oil deliver essential nutrients to the skin and provide elasticity and luminosity, and overall anti-aging action. Designed for daily and nightly application to the face and around the eyes resulting in skin appearing firmer, smoother and brighter after just a few applications.

No preservatives, artificial colors, synthetic perfumes, petroleum derivatives, silicones, alcohol, PEG, PPG, heavy metals, or any other ineffective or harmful ingredients, all this luxury and benefit for a not-so-thrifty price of $145 for 1.7 fl. oz., and we say your face is well worth it!

Available at Space NK apothecary stores nationwide and at select Space NK shops in Bloomingdale’s.

#4 Aveda Carribean Therapy Body Scrub

Aveda’s Carribean Therapy island-inspired body scrub transforms skin and transports the senses, it smells like a tropical vacation in a jar. Loaded with lots of moisturizing oils of coconut, avocado and passionfruit, and excellent exfoliating with salt and Caribbean cane sugar.

This uplifting and astounding product is unusual for a sugar and salt scrub, it doesn’t dissolve quite so quickly when mixed with water, and it helps to banish those unsightly bumps of dry skin and ingrown hairs on the backs of arms and thighs after just one use.

It works its magic and leaves skin so super soft, smooth and radiant. Can be applied to wet or dry skin. Use before getting some sun or before sunless tanners to help build your color faster and longer, AND—(here’s the best part) when used in conjunction with a cold shower a few mornings the week before your vacation, it helps to ramp up the fat burning so that you’ll look your tip top best.

Available in 15.8 oz. jar for $39.50 at aveda.com

#5 Terracotta Mineral Flawless Bronzing Powder

The sun’s hellish rays can wreak havoc on your skin, and when you simply don’t have time to bake, just fake it with a no fuss, no muss, sunless summer glow.

My tried and true go-to for a dash of radiance has always been Bare Minerals Warmth, but now I’ve discovered another bronzing powder from Guerlain that has the same fabulousness, Terracotta Mineral Flawless Bronzing Powder

Guerlain has always been an expert and beauty industry leader in bronzers since 1984 with their legendary Terracotta Bronzing Powder, and then Terracotta Men Bronzing Powder. Now, they’ve introduced Terracotta Mineral in Light (matte light tan), Medium (matte warm golden tan), and Dark (matte bronze)– a bronzing powder made only with ingredients of mineral origin.

This ultra-fine transforming powder works immediately, melting into the skin to leave it feeling soft and smooth. It has a long-lasting formula and richly pigmented with tiny flecks of gold, peach, and a hint of rose and copper tones swirled in. Not only does it create a flawless complexion, use it anywhere on your body too. It also feels wonderfully light and soft, and gives you a healthy, radiant glow!

It’s simple, easy, and non-messy, just release the powder by lightly pressing down on the sifter with the mini kabuki brush. For a smooth, radiant complexion, apply the powder to the face using circular movements, pressing the hairs of the brush firmly against the skin and working from the center outwards.

Available at Neiman Marcus and Sephora for .1 oz. at $65.

#6 La Roche-Posay Anthelios 45 Ultra-Light Fluid for Face

Simply the best (in our opinion) in sun protection is Anthelios 45 with five sun filters and recommended for all skin types. This fast-absorbing sunscreen is ultra-light that leaves skin feeling clean with a silky texture, and a matte finish.

High UVA (PFA 26) and UVB (SPF 45) photoprotection for outdoor use with breakthrough Cell-Ox Shield™, which provides a synergistic combination of patented high efficacy sun filters and a powerful antioxidant complex called Senna Alata, a tropical leaf extract known to defend skin cells to further protect your skin.

Clinically-tested to be a highly effective sunscreen, the 5 key sun filtering ingredients include Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocryene, and Oxybenzone to protect the skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure.

Available online at La Roche-Posay and CVS/pharmacy stores nationwide at $29.50 for 1.7 fl. oz.

#7 Infrared Sauna Treatments

If you’ve already gone to the gym (or not) and need a little more assistance, the hottest thing right now in bikini ready bodies is infrared saunas. Infrared saunas treatments have been known for years to produce both immediate and long lasting health benefits.

This type of sauna helps to reduce water retention, to detoxify and release toxins from the body and simultaneously speed up metabolism, and burn calories in just 30 minutes, all without the unbearable wet-heat and steam of a traditional sauna.

Far infrared heat is a specific wave length of light from the sun. The experience of far infrared is similar to sunbathing. Infrared heat waves reach the body more directly (and not the air, walls and fixtures within the sauna), but this invisible form of radiant heat can induce 2-3 times the volume of sweat of a hot air sauna while operating at a significantly cooler range.

In L.A., the Tao Healing Arts Center in Santa Monica has an unbeatable price of $20 for 45 minutes, or a package of 5 sessions for $85! This center has two infrared saunas that can be booked, one is a single person sauna, and the other is a sauna that can fit up to three people at a time. So go check your local area, for a similar treatment or service.

Eyecare SOS

Eyecare SOS

by Hadrian, Life & Style Director

Your face may have become the focus of the season as this year’s extreme Winter weather wreaked havoc with reduced light, freezing temps, and in some places more sunshine and heat.
Here are some helpful hints and powerful tips to help you Spring into skincare action and take care of unexpected imperfections that come to light around your eyes.

De-Pouf Puffs

While you sleep circulation slows down and causes fluid to collect in your lower eye area causing puffiness. For anti-puffiness action and to firm up pillow-like bags under the eyes, try a roller that gently stimulates microcirculation around skin’s delicate eye area to decongest excess fluid for diminished dark circles and puffiness.

Best Buy: Avon Solutions Wake Up Eye Roller

Avon Solutions Wake Up Eye Roller .40 fl. oz $17.50

Enhanced with built-in vibrations and clinically shown to increase microcirculation with key ingredients of Plankton, Sunflower, and Wheat Germ extracts, they work synergistically to dramatically reduce the look of under eye bags.

Lighten Dark Circles

For your dark circle dilemma, brightening and lightening ingredients will help treat dark circles (often yellowish brown and bluish-purple tints) if increased melanin or pigmentation is the result of sun exposure, sleepless nights, heredity, allergies, or sinus problems.

Kojic acid, which is derived from mushrooms, has a whitening effect and penetrates the upper layers of the skin to inhibit the formation of pigmentation and lighten dark circles.

Eye Brighteners like Vitamin C, and Vitamin K also help to diffuse and soften the appearance of dark circles.

Best Buy: DDF Erase Eye Gel

DDF Erase Eye Gel .5 oz. $48

This DDF superstar contains a blend of Kojic Acid, Vitamin K1, Vitamin C, Citrus Bioflavonoids, Horse Chestnut, and Green Tea extract collectively provides natural effectiveness to target and help erase under eye circles. Also, the gel formula is lightweight and ever great for the unusually hot Winter in some places.

Crinkly Lines Fighter

The eyes are one the first places to show the signs of aging, and in the ultimate quest for a smooth and line-free face, ingredients that work to fill in lines, to help boost depleted collagen and elastin, to lift, firm and smooth eye area surfaces, are the age-erasing, wrinkle-fighting solutions.

Best Buy: StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate for Wrinkles

StriVectin-SD Eye Concentrate 1 fl. oz. $59

The peptide potency in conjunction with skin moisturizers will create unparalleled wrinkle-fighting action. StriVection utilizes more efficacious peptides, brighteners and soft focus light diffusers. You’ll notice a reduction in the appearance of deep wrinkles and expression lines with a smoother texture and younger-looking skin around the eyes and wherever else crinkly lines form. It’s a proven line & wrinkle reducer!

5 New Year Beauty Must Tries

5 New Year Beauty Must Tries

For most, the start of a New Year marks a time for new beginnings- new starts. Where beauty is concerned, there might be products you have heard of before but wanted to learn more about before committing to….or were afraid to spend the money on. You might be in a place with the new year approaching where you are looking to invest in a new product to incorporate into your established routine. Let this list serve as another research resource for your decision making. These 5 list makers are tried and tested products that you will find on almost any Beauty Insider’s “Best of” list. If you have not yet heard of some of these or have heard of them but not yet tried them- they are all worth a look. In queries posed to top Beauty Industry Insiders these are performance All Stars. Year round. Some of these- year after year. Others are newer to the list. Consider these inside information. What better time to try something new than the new year…..

1) Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation- It’s pretty safe to say that this is the go-to foundation found in the kits of many (if not most) Professional Makeup Artists I meet. I’ve never seen anything dominate a category for makeup the way this foundation has.

2) Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage- The perfect texture for staying power. The dual tone is essential for blending perfectly into the skin. The matte finish seals over imperfections like nothing I’ve tried. I keep coming back to it after experimenting with other brands.

3) Lavanilla Deodorant- The search for an aluminum free, all natural deodorant that works is over, kids. I am so grateful that I read a review of this a while back which set me on my researching frenzy to read review after review. Consumers were saying that it worked. I bought the Vanilla Lavender at Sephora and I can tell you first hand- this is my dream deodorant. The good news- it works. I personally found that less is more which makes it a money saver. For $18 you might be comforted to hear that. It comes in other fragrances such as Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Coconut, and Vanilla Grapefruit. I am obsessed. I will eventually try all of these scents.

4) Nars Blush- Nothing sweeps onto the cheek like it. The velvet texture is almost creamy and the available color range is unmatched. Unanimously respected and recognized as the go to blush in a lot of Makeup Artist’s kits.

5) Clarisonic Mia- I didn’t want to believe this pricey exfoliation device was worth the $149 price tag. I was convinced it had to be hype. I started asking around. Try this yourself. Ask someone who is using the Clarisonic Mia to tell you what they think about it. In the people I talked to- two comments came up everytime- “ I can’t imagine my life without it now.” and “It is worth every penny.” Talk of disappearing pores and clarity as immediate results has developed the Clarisonic Mia a cult following.

Tangerine Living’s A Few of Our Favorite Things 2010

Tangerine Living’s A Few of Our Favorite Things 2010

by Hadrian, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

A time to reflect on the year that was, and we’ve compiled a list of some of our guilty pleasures, the Top 10 Obsessions of 2010:

1. Coconut Water

Oh-so refreshing Coconut Water!

I was koo koo for oh-so yummy coconut water in 2010 because I could practically find it everywhere, which was never really the case growing up because I would have to go to a specialty Latin or Asian market just to get it.

Coconut Water makes our list for its wholesome goodness, and its lightweight, refreshing taste. It’s rich in potassium and electrolytes, and low in calories so its great as a post-workout thirst quencher, and for its super-hydrating capabilities.

Available with or without pulp, Coconut Water follows the popularity of a few years back of the Pomegranate, when everywhere you looked there was some kind of drink or brand that had it.

My favorite brand of Agua de Coco (Coconut Water) is by Goya  and can be easily found at smaller markets or bodegas, O.N.E. for it’s versions with mango and guava, and also Amy & Brian Coconut Juice because of its coconut pulp and generous 17.5 oz can. Although some flavored versions have more sugar (and typically taste better), unflavored coconut water is lower in sugar. Not only is it good to drink, but coconut water is also great for your skin and hair!

2. Antoine Dodson

Antoine Dodson. Photo by Shelli Langdale

The news story about him and his sister’s home invasion, and the autotune song about the whole incident became an internet phenom.

During a summer day in July, Antoine Dodson was featured and interviewed by NBC affiliate WAFF-48 News in a news clip about the local police searching for a man who broke into the Dodsons’ home in the Lincoln Park Housing Project in Huntsville, Alabama and then tried to assault his sister in bed. After a brief struggle, the intruder escaped through a window and Antoine said the suspect left behind his shirt and fingerprints.

The song about the bed intruder created by the Gregory Brothers was ingenius and catchy. We were often found ourselves humming the lyrics “he’s climbin’ in your window, he’s snatching your people up, trying to rape ‘em so y’all need to hide your kids, hide your wife, hide your kids, hide your wife.” It turned an unfortunate situation into one of the most hilarious and funny parodies around and catapulted Dodson into an internet star.

Here is the actual news clip, and the Bed Intruder Song created by the Gregory Brothers.

3. GLEE

Gleeks took aim and quickly launched the Fox show into an instant TV pop comedy smash. Loaded with Top 40 chart hits and musical tributes to Madonna, Lady Gaga, Rocky Horror, and Britney Spears, and fresh off it’s freshman year with two Emmys and guest stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Carol Burnett and Gwyneth Paltrow, Glee has sang and danced its way to become the new America’s Sweetheart.

4. James Mathé

It’s no doubt that music keeps the spirit alive and London-based James Mathé’s sweet, fuzzy rock sounds has kept my music player busy and reawakened my soul.

Armed simply with a Casio Casiotone MT-70, an Omnichord, and some 808 beats, his music includes “Pallyacho”, and a  cover of  Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Wishing Well”, as well as other low-fi electro soul gems.

This artist formerly known in 2007 as Barbarossa has an excellent EP of demos called the Bedrume Cassettes. These demos provide a glimpse from the upcoming full-length record titled, Care Cracks. I’ve also heard the title track “Care Cracks”, “People Talk” and “Bloodlines”, and I can hardly wait for the finished album!

Sometimes the best music is simple and melodic with a soulful voice, without all the polish and all the unnecessary bells and whistles!

Watch and listen to Pallyacho and see what all the hoopla is about!

Pallyacho

5. iPad

The eagerly awaited launch from Apple quickly sold 3 million in the first months of sales. In the tablet world, the iPad continues to define the category and weighs only 1.5 lbs and has a lightning quick operating system.

Apple iPad

Apple tauts it as revolutionary, with a 9.7 inch touch screen, and amazing new apps, it does things no tablet PC, netbook, or e-reader could, and we couldn’t agree more.

The iPad also benefits from an enormous and growing selection of applications written specifically for it, and that’s one of places it earns high marks. I  have been seen toting around one and stuck on stupid playing the app Angry Birds. Its fun, compact, so portable, I love it, but as a fellow Tangeriner has called it the latest gadget for mid-life crisis-ers…, I couldn’t disagree more, it’s just a great toy for adults!

(But for you non-Apple sympathesizers, alternatively there is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, by its specifications and features alone, would be the obvious trade off for iPad-refusers. But this smaller and lighter Android device doesn’t have an equally shrunken price, and could run you about $600 – 650 without a 2 year wireless-data contract).

6. Steven Slater

JetBlue flight attendant that almost goes postal

We absolutely love us some drama, and that’s exactly what Steven Slater gave us one fateful day in August. The gay, Jet Blue flight attendant who garnered national media attention and notoriety for quite simply having had enough from a passenger at the end of a flight.

By nearly going postal, he blasted his frustration over the airplane intercom, he then grabbed two Blue Moon beers, activated the emergency inflatable chute, jumped and slid down with his bags, got on the AirTrain to the parking garage and drove himself home to Queens.

It doesn’t get any better than this, “To the passenger who called me a motherfucker, fuck you. I’ve been in the business 20 years. I’ve had it. That’s it.”

7. Korean Style Mexican-American Food

yummy Korean Kalbi Taco

Hmm hmm good…Kalbi tacos (Korean-style barbecued short ribs)  served on tortillas and garnished with onion, cilantro and a hash of chili-soy-dressed lettuce, and Bulgogi burritos are some of the many Korean foods being fused into popular Mexican and American dishes.

The Korean taco and burrito was popularized and pioneered by Roy Choi and his Kogi Korean BBQ-To-Go catering truck in the Los Angeles area in 2008, this new style of Korean cuisine has been sweeping both coasts and everyplace in between ever since.

Other Korean style foods include a Kimchi Quesadilla or a Kimchi-topped Hot Dogs,  and Korean Salsa Roja.

8. Loca for Locavores & Farmer’s Markets

A locavore is someone who eats food that is locally produced, food not moved long distances to market. The food is usually grown in home gardens or by local farmers  interested in keeping the environment as eco and clean as possible and selling food close to where it is grown. Some people consider food grown within a 100-mile radius of their location local, while others have other definitions.

Farmers markets are growing in every possible way all around the country.  New markets are springing up everywhere. While the trend is growing, over-saturation and non-regulation is becoming a worry. More small farmers are appearing at the markets offering an even wider range of products like unusual varieties of produce, heirloom, and foraged foods.

And this is where it can get crazy, advocates of local food production have done a world of good in terms of bringing fresh food closer to home, but most of us must admit that in many cases we really haven’t a clue if the local farmers we support run sustainable systems. And to make matters even worse, the current face in farmer’s market fraud is for vendors to sell goods from conventional farmers with misleading signs and false labels who don’t utilize the costly and time-consuming organic certification process. The result is often shoppers who don’t get what they pay for.

So, my kinda crazy is to make sure you know what you eat, how it is produced and where it is from! Just because you buy it from a Farmer’s Market, it doesn’t mean that it’s fresh or natural, or even organic. The best locavore is to grow your own, and someone who will bike, run or walk and not drive to a reliable grower in a quality Farmer’s Market.

9. Black Gardens & Flowers

Black Iris in full bloom

Black has always been the color of choice for me. I’m obsessed with darker hues, black boots, dark jeans, shiny black Italian sunglasses, slate grey narrow jeans, midnight blue liquid eyeliner, fast black cars, black rock-n-roll tees…and now black greenery, or gothic floral gardens.

It’s just the time to paint it black and rethink your garden and the traditionally vibrant colors associated with it by adding a little black to your backyard or patio landscape with some intriguing darker toned fruits, flowers, plants, grasses, and mulch.

Adding dark grasses, plants and black mulch not only offers your garden flower bed with a unique, non-traditional appearance, but is designed to allow the bright colors of other plants and flowers to become more noticeable against a dark backdrop. In my backyard, I’ve introduced darker-hued/black flowers (like purplely Black Iris, and the Black Pearl Cala Lilly) and veggies (like eggplant) too with more colorful ones to add a touch of style and to make the more vibrant blooms pop. Other great flowers include Black Dahlias, Night Queen Tulips, Black Hollyhocks, Penny Black Nemophila and Black Pansies. Maybe this is definitely not the most widely accepted approach in home gardening and decor, but how exciting and different it is that flowers and gardens are now sporting some black too. It’s just so 2010 (and 2011) of you!

10. Eataly

The menu at Le Verdure

I heart Eataly!  Eataly is New York City’s 50,000 square-foot, massive food emporium devoted to the artisanal food and wine, and culinary traditions of Italy.

There are 14 places to dine here, four of them actual restaurants, with the ability to seat about 600 in these various restaurants. Il Manzo is the only restaurant in Eataly that will take reservations.

The primo spot in Eataly is right off entry foyer and is called is Le Verdure, the mostly-vegan resto. It serves a super delish sweet corn bruschetta with roasted garlic as one of their specials. You can also find fresh veggies simply cooked in olive oil and sea salt, as opposed to the obligatory faux-meat fare often found at vegan spots, as well as discovering the outstanding quality of the oils and vinegars used in their menu. The heirloom tomato and radish salad is pretty tasty too.

Among the many things you’ll see at Eataly, you’ll also find a fresh pasta counter, a crudo bar, a macelleria (aka butcher), a paninoteca, a roticceria, a pasticceria, a gelateria, and of course an espresso counter featuring Lavazza coffees, to name just a few of their treasures.

Eataly is a must-see when in New York. It’s located at 200 Fifth Avenue (at 23rd St.) in Manhattan.

The Best Summer Skin Savers

The Best Summer Skin Savers

by Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

Antioxidants can often pick up the slack and keep your skin healthy when sunscreens don’t block out all of the sun’s rays. In the summer, the body’s natural defenses may sometimes need a little help from the sun’s ultraviolet rays which can advance the amount of free radical damage to your skin. Our face, hands and neck are the first areas to show signs of aging and must be especially cared for and protected.

So, increased antioxidant protection both inside and out, topically with skin care products and internally with vegetables and fruits, is often the ideal because using a product or consuming antioxidant-rich foods that incorporates several antioxidants will garner more plentiful benefits.

Found in tons of fruits and veggies, antioxidants take the form of enzymes, vitamins, or minerals. Here’s a look at some of the hardest-working skin protectors and revitalizers and some of the best products that contain them.

Rice for smoother, fresh, and radiant skin

Rice (Oryza Sativa) is an antioxidant, skin-refiner, and conditioner. It helps to exfoliate, liven up dull skin, and uncover a fresher, brighter skin. Rice is great for any skin type from oily to dry.

Modern Friction 4 oz. / $37.50

Modern Friction 4 oz. /$37.50

To transform your skin from rough to smooth, from old to young,  from dull to luminous – Try nature’s gentler alternative to microdermabrasion with Origins Modern Friction. Modern Friction contains rice starch, which is cushioned in a cream paste, it’s antioxidant-rich formula shows real affinity for rapidly removing sluggish cells, uneven patches and signs of skin damage and discolorations.

Two buffing techniques include a physical and chemical exfoliant, with the rice starch to help loosen up dull, lifeless, dead skin cells, and also apple extract, which contains malic acid (an alphahydroxy acid),  to dissolve them. These two type of ingredients when utilized together will produce a most noticeably gorgeous, glowing skin. Essential oils of bergamot, peppermint, and lemon, provide help to invigorate and soothe your mind and body in a light, fresh scent.

Key Ingredients:

Rose Water tones and soothes skin, a mild astringent and antiseptic.

Rice Starch is naturally sticky and this stickiness helps tie up dirt and sebum on skin.

Apple Extract is rich in polyphenols and AHA fruit acids, refines the skin’s texture and protects skin cells against free radicals. Good source of vitamins A, B, C, and K.

Aloe & Cucumber helps to hydrate, heal, calm, cool, and soothe the skin.

Grapeseed and Vitamin A, C, E for well-hydrated, plumper lips

Since lips lack sebaceous glands, which can form a protective layer, lips are thin, often dry, and sensitive to the sun (plus more prone to sunburn and wrinkling too). UV rays are collagen destroyers, and collagen keep things firm, soft, and smooth.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment $22.00

To keep your lips super-smooth, exfoliated, and hydrated, Fresh has Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 with antioxidant grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins A, C & E nourish, hydrate, and protect from wrinkle-causing free radicals. Blackcurrant oil cushions the lips with plumping fatty acids for a fuller, smoother appearance.

Key Ingredients:

Meadowfoam Seed Oil and Apricot Kernel Oil provide additional, rich sources of super-moisturizing fatty acids and Vitamin E.

Vitamins A, C, and E helps prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin by preventing free radical damage.

Sugar exfoliates and works as a moisture magnet.

Octinoxate and Oxbenzone are active SPF ingredients that provide consistent and necessary sun protection.

Bisabolol and Helioplex for sensitivity and special sun care

Skin that is prone to allergic reactions or for those with especially sun-sensitive skin requires special sun care protection.

Piz Buin Allergy Lotion 6.7 fl. oz /$11

This product combines advanced UVA/UVB sun filters and Calmanelle, a unique shield complex proven to reinforce skin cell defense against UV rays and increase tolerance to the sun. Key Ingredients:

Bisabolol is the active ingredient in chamomile flowers. Its soothing, anti-inflammatory and regenerating properties helps to minimize sun reactions and helps to prevent irritation. It is particularly suited to delicate skin or skin damaged by harsh environmental conditions.

Helioplex technology provides photo-stable UVA/UVB broadspectrum protection. Helioplex has been scientifically proven to maintain up to 90% of its active protection after five hours of sunlights.

Calmanelle helps soothe skin. It contains a rich hydration complex and provides hours of moisturization.

Vitamin E, an antioxidant, helps reinforce your skin’s natural defense mechanism and prevent skin aging.

Apply generously before sun exposure. Fully body application = 3 tablespoons. Reducing the quantity lowers the level of protection significantly. Reapply frequently, especially after sweating, swimming and drying off.

Yogurt & Quince to soothe and heal stressed, after-sun skin

Korres Yogurt Body Butter 5.7 fl. oz / $21If you have spent some time tanning or outdoors and picked up some color or maybe a sunburn, then try Yogurt Body Butter by Korres, which offers advanced moisturizing and antiaging action. Green Tea prevents oxidative stress, protects skin from UVA and UVB radiation damage and reduces the number of sunburned cells.

Pomegranate and Acai extracts are superfruits that offer anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, astringent, brightening, cell regenerating, and collagen protecting benefits.

Coconut Oil for shiny, smooth, well-nourished hair

Kiehl's Extra-Strength Conditioning Rinse 8.4 fl. oz / $21

Kiehl's Extra-Strength Conditioning Rinse 8.4 fl oz /$21

Summer sun, ocean water, heat, and swimming pools can leave hair arid dry and brittle. Coconut oil can provide intense moisture, smooth frizzies, and restore hair’s natural luster.

Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera) is a super-rich emollient to smooth and lubricate the skin and hair. It is abundant with natural antiseptic fatty acids that helps to soften, polish, and strengthen.

Kiehl’s Extra-Strength Conditioning Rinse with added Coconut deeply moisturizes and protects hair from root to tip. This deep conditioning treatment restores moisture, softens split ends and adds radiant shine to thirsty hair.

Key Ingredients:

Lecithin is an emollient, and an antioxidant. It’s a hydrophilic ingredient that attracts water.

Panthenol is a penetrating moisturizer which absorbs into the skin and hair and is converted into Pantothenic Acid, a B complex vitamin. Assists products in retaining water and also absorbs water from the air, aiding in skin and hair moisturization.

Keep in mind for these outdoor, fun, sunny months that antioxidants helps to boost SPF protection of topical sunscreens. Choose skin, hair, and body care with both antioxidants and SPF for the best defense, or layer an antioxidant-rich serum before a moisturizing sunscreen.

Antioxidants will keep your skin looking bright, healthy, and young, so use products that contain them all Summer long.

Behind the scenes Reelz Channel

Reelz Channel "Behind the Scene"

Nick and I also got a chance to work together outside of The Victory Project when we were asked to appear on the Reelz Channel show Hollywood Dailies to give the lovely host of the show, Naibe Reynoso, the Oscar treatment and to contribute our Oscar Fashion & Beauty red carpet forecasts. Click on the link to watch the episode-http://www.reelzchannel.com/trailer-clips/46093/hollywood-dailies-oscar-

I watched the Oscars and wanted to see if my Beauty predictions would come true and I was surprised……most of the actresses played it really safe. I wanted to see more Neo-Retro, Mad Men inspired “classic Hollywood” looks on the red carpet but a few actresses stood out to me.

Sleek, sophisticated hair, flawless skin and bright pink lips on Sandra Bullock. I loved everything about how she looked.

Cameron Diaz played with a Neo Retro look….Rita Hayworth side-part classic Hollywood waves, gorgeous skin, pink cheek and coral-orange lipstick. Gorgeous.

And Charlize Theron looked amazing- sleek updo, flawless matte skin, fresh coral pink cheek with an orange red satin creamy lip.

Clean, classic beauty played up with a pop of color on the lips will never go out of style.

For the most part, a lot of actresses played it safe with beiges, golds and bronze-neutral makeup looks. Noticably and thankfully absent from the Oscar red carpet were the overdone, orange spray tans we have seen for so many years in a row. The result: a lot of actresses looked fresher, younger and more sophisticated than we’ve seen in years…….

Beauty Trends from the Fall/Winter 2010 runway…..

Perhaps most of the actresses were looking ahead to the Fall/Winter 2010 fashion shows which showcased a lot of nude, neutral makeup looks. It’s all about beautiful, satiny and light matte skin on the runways….the nude look…with it’s monochrome simplicity and minimalism…were accented by a light coral-pink lip at Marc Jacobs. Neutral, sheer nude lips finished a palette of caramels, and toffees with a light gray smokey eye at Chloe. One thing is for sure- get that skin in top shape. It’s about seeing clean, natural untanned skin.

Winter Skin Defense

Winter Skin Defense

by Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

This season has been some of the most extreme weather to date in the world. With blizzards clobbering Europe and pounding New York and the East Coast, hardly ever freezing temps reported in Miami and the South,  to recent heavy rains and tsunami-advisories afflicting California and the West Coast, your skin has paid dearly with freezing cold air and harsh, forceful winds that are tacking on some dryness, dullness, irritation, redness, and flaking.

Here are 4 helpful hints to protect , nourish, and help quench your skin’s thirst (and hair and body too!) during these cold Winter months:

1. Ahh-some Açaí : The Better Berry

The Açaí berry is known as a super berry because it has among the highest antioxidant capacity of any fruit with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine. This helps prevent free-radical damages to skin cells.

Açaí is also rich in essential fatty acids, such as omega-6 and omega-9, which help to maintain the skin’s elasticity and smoothness and prevent water loss. It also contains flavanoids, which fight inflammation, together with essential amino and fatty acids to help regenerate skin cell growth and phytosterols to preserve collagen.

Kiehl's Acai SerumMust-Have: a serum booster Kiehl’s Açaí Damage-Repairing Serum 1.7 fl. oz. / $49.

An ultra concentrated, readily-absorbent formula quickly penetrates skin’s surface to repair the effects of visible damage to skin’s tone, texture and elasticity due to environmental oxidation, sun exposure and other external skin stressors. The super-antioxidant Organic Açaí Berry from the Brazilian Amazon, in combination with Aloe Vera Juice, Lavender and Rosemary Essential Oils to help skin repair the visible effects of both physical and environmental damage.

2. Matcha: The Queen of Green Tea

When your face and body needs a quick pick me up in addition to some TLC, then turn to powdered tea that’s the color of money. Matcha is the queen of all green tea because it is made of whole ground tea leaves as opposed to an aqueous infusion (or watered down version) of green tea.

Matcha green tea has tannins that help to strengthen and boost collagen, resulting in firmer, toned skin and significantly improving its elasticity. Matcha’s antioxidant components consist of a special group of potent and plentiful polyphenols called catechins which have been shown to penetrate cells very effectively. Matcha is reported to be 20 times stronger than vitamin E.

Its anti-inflammatory properties are found in its caffeine which combines with its polyphenols to deliver superb skin benefits. As an anti-inflammatory it can aid in improving and healing acne, rosacea, and eczema by reducing redness, puffiness, and swelling.

Origins Matcha Body LotionIt is one of the most potent forms of photoprotection, which means that it protects against sun damage and reduces the number of sunburned cells. When combined with other antioxidants along with and prior to a sunscreen, green tea increases sun protection. So not only does it help to protect the skin from UV damage, but it also prevents collagen breakdown, and boosts detoxifying enzymes to promote skin clarity and improve its overall health and wellness.

Must Have: Origin’s The Way of the Bath Matcha Tea Body Lotion 6.7 fl. oz. / $40.

This aromatic, lightweight Matcha body lotion is rich in natural antioxidants plus Rice Butter and Murumuru Butter to cocoon skin in protective moisture. Stress-silencing Ginseng and hydrating Kukui Nut, Jojoba Seed and Sweet Almond Oils replenish body and soul.  And the blend of essential oils enlivens consciousness and soothes the spirit.

3. Mega Moisturizers: The Power of Moisture Magnets

Immortelle MaskOne of my most favorite products to use year round, but especially magnificent for Winter, is an ultra-hydrating mask  from L’Occitane called Immortelle Cream Mask. This excellent face treatment contains soothing Shea butter, which is high in fatty acids and other nutrients and is a superb emollient that hydrates deep down and restores the hydrolipidic film, cushioning the skin and leaving it softer, more supple and plump.

This creamy mask is packed with vitamins E and A to help stimulate cell renewal, and also contains the essential oil of the Immortelle flower which naturally defies aging – it never wilts or withers, even after being picked. Microcapsule technology concentrates the hand-harvested essential oil in a formula that helps to boost microcirculation and increase collagen synthesis therefore reducing the signs of aging. A velvety, patented-ingredient moisturizer with proven wrinkle-reducing benefits. This mask also doubles as a moisturizer so you can just leave it on!!!

EA 8 CreamGloria Ortiz, Cosmetic Sales Manager & Lead Esthetician at Red Door Spas in San Francisco, really believes in lush creams capable of providing intense hydration and  moisture barriers. Her favorite beauty product is a classic moisturizer that was originally launched in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden called 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant. Gloria says, “It is just so healing and soothing to chapped lips, hands, rough areas. It must be used sparingly, but it heals abrasions like you wouldn’t believe.”  This balm can also soothe and comfort minor weather burns, redness, and scrapes whenever and wherever needed.

Must-Haves: L’Occitane Immortelle Cream Mask 4.4 oz. / $60 and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant 1.7 fl. oz / $17

4. The Shine of the Times – Argan Oil

Argan OilFor thirsty, unruly, and dull hair, Seattle hairstylist Katie Bell, a Senior Hair Designer at Marco Two Union Square salon swears by Argan Oil to make hair beautiful, bouncy, and shiny. She uses it every chance she gets to effortlessly transform and blow out all hair types (especially excessively curly and unmanageable tresses) into pretty, smooth, and silky hair instantly.

Argan oil, indigenous to Morocco and rich in omega-6, antioxidants and vitamin E, penetrates into the hair to seal split ends and creates a barrier against the damaging effects of heat, sun, wind, and styling to bring back a healthy and natural shine.  It also softens, smoothes, and tames the frizz. Katie says this special oil has revolutionized the hair care industry and how she now does hair!

Since Argan oil is a great source of  linoleic acid, omega-6, omega-9, tocopherols, polyphenols, and ferulic acid, it’s excellent when applied to skin as it helps restore and protect against free-radical damage while essential fatty acids keep skin hydrated and balanced.

Must-Have: Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil for face, hair, and body 4.2 fl. oz. /$30

the A B C’s of Skincare Ingredients

the A B C’s of Skincare Ingredients

Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

Every beauty product has a star ingredient that sets it apart and makes it special, and often— it’s those unique, defining and signature ingredients that mean the difference between a product you really love and one quite simply that you cannot live without.

Here are some of the top, powerful, and hard-hitting beauty ingredients worth exploring and using to get fast results. Using a combination of these active ingredients is essential and a skin care must-have for awesome, gorgeous, and better looking skin.

Some of the ingredients I’ve listed are well-known beauty staples, while others may be new to you or new to skincare. So let’s take a look at some of the ABC’s of skincare ingredients.

A

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Also known as: Lipoic Acid, Thioctic Acid

Good For:
All skin types, Sun Damage and Aging, except very sensitive skin.

How It Works:
Alpha Lipoic Acid is known as a universal antioxidant because it protects both water and fat soluble cell structures from free radical damage. It helps to decrease skin roughness and wrinkles as well as,  helps with exfoliation and the stimulation of collagen, which may lead to a smoother appearance of the skin.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an anti-glycation ingredient. Glycation is a natural process where excess sugar sticks to protein fibers binding them together causing fibers to become dry and brittle. As a result, skin loses it’s elasticity and becomes more vulnerable to wrinkling, sagging and UV damage.

Since it’s a powerful exfoliator, avoid it if your skin is sensitive or prone to redness.

Best Buys: Alba Sea Plus Renewal Cream, $14.95 / Aubrey Rosa Marqueta Night Creme With Alpha Lipoic Acid, $16.50

Argireline

Also Known As: Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

Good For: Sun-damaged, aging, and mature skin

How It Works: Argireline, a neuropeptide and hexapeptide, prohibits muscles from contracting and also reduces the degree and depth of wrinkles. When applied to the skin, Argireline helps to relax facial tension resulting in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Kinda works similarly to Botox, just without the injection or the Botulinum Toxin.

Best Buys: Derma E Peptides Plus Wrinkle Reverse Creme, $38.50 / DDF Wrinkle Relax, $88

Astaxanthin

Also known as: 3,3′-Dihydroxy-b,b-carotene-4,4′-dione

Recommended for: All skin, especially Aging, and Sun-Damage skin

How it works: Harvested from micro-algae and responsible for the pink color in  shrimp and lobster, salmon, and flamingos, astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant. An amazing ingredient that has been found to be 500 times more powerful than Vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals and 1000 times more effective than both Beta-Carotene and Lutein in protecting the skin from exposure to UV light. Its antioxidant properties help to reduce inflammation, normalize skin function and enhance the skin’s defense system, and protects the skin cells when applied topically.

Best Buy: Derma E Age-Defying Day Creme with Astaxanthin & Pycnogenol, $39.50

B

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

Also known as: Salicylic Acid, Salix Nigra (Willow) Bark Extract

Good for: Normal, Oily, Acne-prone skin

How it works:
Salicylic acid clears skin and prevents future breakouts, and can penetrate the sebum that clogs pores, clearing blackheads. When used on a regular basis, it can decrease the frequency and severity of acne eruptions.

It’s best to avoid this ingredient if you have dry or sensitive skin, or an allergy to aspirin (it’s in the same family as aspirin, the pain reliever).

Best Buys: Murad Clarifying  Cleanser, $26 / Origins Out of Trouble 10 Minute Mask, $21

C

Carnosine

Also Known As: Beta-alanyl-L-histidine

Good For: Normal, Aging, Mature, and Sun-Damage skin.

How it works: Carnosine is an anti-glycation molecule that acts like a magnet by attracting sugar molecules to itself instead of to collagen fibers, thus helping to prevent the skin’s matrix from stiffening and maintaining skin’s suppleness.

Anti-glycation products are one of the newest frontiers in skincare. Glycation—when sugar molecules naturally present in the skin adhere to collagen and elastin fibers, creating rigid bridges between fibers known advanced glycation end products (AGEs)—as a major cause of skin aging.

Carnosine is one of the only agents that addresses all three processes leading to aging — oxidation, inflammation and glycation.

Best Buy: La Roche-Posay Derm AOX Serum, $55.

Cupuaçu

Also known as: Theobroma Grandiflorum

Good For: Dry, Normal, Sun Damage, Aging and Sensitive skin.

With age, the body’s ability to produce its own hyaluronic acid diminishes and topical application helps replenish the skin, and most importantly, fine lines, wrinkles, and dryness are less noticeable when skin is moist, plump, and smooth.

It’s best to avoid hyaluronic acid if you live in a low-humidity climate because it can sit unabsorbed on the surface of the skin and may actually dehydrate it,  drawing out moisture.

Best Buy: Derma E Hyaluronic Hydrating Mist, $13.50

Idebenone

Also Known As: a synthetic analog of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Good For:
All skin,  including Sun Damage, Irritation, and Aging skin.

How It Works:
In the early 1990′s a group of German scientists researched Ibedenone’s ability as an antioxidant when topically applied to the skin. In comparing the size of Ibedenone to Coenzyme to Q10, Ibedenone is 60% and because of its small size it has a more potent protective and revitalizing effect in the fight against aging.

Idebenone embeds itself in skin membranes and then it has a double action; blocking and scavenging environmentally generated free radicals, and penetrating and neutralizing internally generated free radicals.

Idebenone is one of the strongest antioxidants contained in beauty that firms, tones, and evens out skin. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties which helps to preserve collagen and elastin resulting in firmer, more resilient skin. Idebenone corrects and protects skin cells, improves fine lines and wrinkles, and texture.

Saving Face

Saving Face

Hadrian Miguel, Lifestyle & Beauty Director

There are some age intensifiers that simply just add years to your face and body. How can you save face and be the best you all day, every day?
Antioxidants are key and essential to having gorgeous skin and a fantastic body.
Antioxidants are essential

Antioxidants are essential for a healthy-looking complexion

First, an antioxidant is a substance which inhibits or prevents damage from free radicals. Found in tons of fruits and veggies, antioxidants take the form of enzymes, vitamins, or minerals.

So let’s take a look at a few factors that ages us quickly and how antioxidants neutralize them:

1- Sunbathing and tanning beds can add about 10-20 years to your age. The sun can be your skin’s worst enemy and lead to premature aging. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial light can have many health risks and UVA and UVB damage is something significant, dangerous and irreparable, so it is crucial to use a sunscreen at all times when stepping outside, even on a gray days.

2- City living can add about 5 years to your age. Big cities have more vehicles, and more pollution generated from autos, smoke, industrial pollutants, and many places for dirt and grime, and even soot to hide and be exposed to.

3- Smoking can add approximately 20+ years to your age and even worse, your lifespan is dramatically decreased and can tragically be cut short. Diseases like cancer and emphysema are just two of many dangerous problems associated with smoking.

Classic signs of premature aging associated with the damage from urban city pollution and smoking that assault your skin are loss of elasticity, age spots, thinning skin, dehydration, and wrinkles.

4- Crash dieting can add about 10 years. Some of us have done it, but to keep doing it and yo-yoing back and forth between weight is the surest way to have skin that sags, stretches, and leave marks.

Derma E DMAE Alpha Lipoic Facial Cleanser, 6 fl. oz., $15.50

Derma E DMAE Facial Cleanser, 6 fl. oz., $15.50

Be sure to compensate for all this by using cleansers and creams loaded with multiple antioxidants in them to increase the benefits. You can also add antioxidants in the form of nutritional supplements to your diet to maximize your fight against free radical and environmental damage to your skin and body.

Some of my favorite antioxidant-rich products to counter the effects of pollution, smoking and saggy skin from dieting:

Derma E DMAE Alpha Lipoic C-Ester Facial Cleanser has gravity-defying DMAE which reduces facial sag and firms skin. Researchers report that DMAE has improved skin hydration and tone and reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Alpha Lipoic Acid, the universal antioxidant, protects both water and fat soluble cell structures from free radical damage, while C-Ester stimulates the production of collagen, essential for skin tone and elasticity.

DHC SunCut Q10 30+, 1 fl. oz., $16.50

DHC SunCut Q10 30+, 1 fl. oz., $16.50

My favorite sun protection product is DHC SunCut Q10 30+ because it is super-lightweight, has no heavy sunblock smell, has a long-lasting formula, absorbs quickly, and it boasts the benefits of nanotechnology, as well as the combo of Olive Oil and Coenzyme Q10 to fight the signs of aging beyond sun damage. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that occurs naturally within the body that helps your skin protect and defend itself from the visible signs of aging. I love it too because it’s a sunscreen that also doubles as a moisturizer and is brimming with antioxidants. It is the best combination and most effective defense.

I have found that I have a lot more energy and my skin has more resiliency when I take this supplement.

All antioxidants are not created equal if we consider their antioxidant content. Some are better than the others. Here are some excellent antioxidant-rich skin care ingredients:

Vitamin A (Retinol), also synthesized by the body from beta-carotene, protects dark green, yellow and orange veggies and fruits from solar radiation damage, and is thought to play a similar role in the body. Carrots, tomatoes, peaches, apricots, and cantaloupe are particularly rich sources of beta-carotene. Vitamin A assists exfoliation by encouraging dead cells to be sloughed of. It also improves the quality of the skin’s collagen layer, and the skin’s elasticity, tone and texture. The best feature is that Vitamin A smooths skin surface and improves appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C from citrus fuits like lemons, limes, and oranges and other important sources of Vitamin C like blueberries,  and strawberries help to stimulate or boost collagen, exfoliates to uncover newer & smoother skin, and brightens and even out tone. It also reduces transepidermal water loss, thus strengthening skin’s barrier response, and promotes collagen production and has the potential to thicken the dermis. Vitamin C improves the appearance of sun-damaged skin by strengthening skin’s repair mechanisms.

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin and protect lipids. Excellent sources include olive oil, wheat germ, nuts and seeds. It is one of the most well-known and researched antioxidants, both when taken orally and when used in skin-care products. Vitamin E helps protect against moisture loss, can help defend the skin from early stages of UV damage, increases the efficacy of active sunscreen ingredients, assists to reduce the severity of sunburn, and most importantly, skin absorbs and maintains levels of topical vitamin E, prolonging its benefits between applications.

Antioxidants will keep your skin looking bright, healthy, and younger, so use products that contain them, and you’ll be armed with some regenerative and potent beauty tools in the universal fight against premature aging, and the most important solution to saving face…and body too!

Brilliant Little Eye Beauty Tricks!

Hadrian Miguel, Skincare & Lifestyle Director

Here are 9 quick tips so you can get gorgeous eyes…and make you pretty, pronto!

sexy caucasian womanAwaken Your Eyes
An eye cream or concealer with brighteners and natural light-reflectors like mica will liven up and lighten eyes instantly.

Lubricate Your Lashes
If you want to draw attention to your eyes without putting on tons of makeup, then comb some petroleum jelly lightly through your eyelash tips to get a sexy, subtle glisten and shine. It’ll make you look like you have nice, long, dark lashes (without the layers of mascara)!

Bright-Eyed with Flesh-Colored Eye Pencil

Line the lower inner rims of your eyes with a flesh-colored eye liner to create the illusion of well-rested eyes…this little trick will offset any redness so your eyes look bright. Also, you can line the eye with a white pencil just beneath the lash line. This will give the impression of larger and brighter eyes.

Chill Your Eyeliner
If the tip of your eyeliner pencil crumbles, tugs, and smudges on your lids, put the liner in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes before you’re ready to use it, so the tip is firm and glides across your skin smoothly and effortlessly.

If you have lashes that are super straight, then blow some heat with a hair dryer to a metal eyelash curler to warm it up so your lashes bend and curl more easily.

Heat the curler for a couple of seconds only, and use a waterproof mascara. The waterproof formula dries much faster to help set and keep the curl longer.

Beautiful browsPretty Up & Enhance Your Brows

Use a tinted gel or powder in your desired shade to liven up your color or enhance its shape, or use a pearly white or clear lip gloss to groom and slick not only on your lips but also your brow bones.

You can also mist an eyebrow comb with hairspray to help shape, flatten, and tame unruly eyebrows.

Skip the Eye Makeup Remover

A big bottle of baby shampoo in a no tears formula is an effective and gentle way to take off your eye makeup. Baby shampoo costs much less and lasts way longer than the itty bitty bottles of eye-makeup remover.

Try these simple and superfast tips, and sweetie, you’re destined to have some big, beautiful and sexy eyes!

Prescriptives: Death of A Beauty Brand

Prescriptives: Death of A Beauty Brand

Hadrian Miguel, Skincare & Lifestyle Director

PrescriptivesEstée Lauder has decided to pull the plug on its underperforming Prescriptives line, the department store beauty brand that began in 1979. Prescriptives made a big name for itself in the 80′s & 90′s for it’s Custom Blend Makeup. The only place at the time where you could find and make a foundation that matched your skin right on. Estée Lauder will stop marketing its Prescriptives brand and close its retail counters globally by Jan. 31, 2010.

Prescriptives was a big part of my life because my roommate in the early 1990′s drenched herself in Calyx, the equally-famous Prescriptives fragrance that was eventually copied into a designer imposter spray. Wow, I can almost smell the original now.

As time went on, Prescriptives lost its edge on color makeup and customization as MAC Cosmetics (a sister company) became more popular and as mineral makeup began to take its huge piece of the color cosmetics pie.  It also seemed that Clinique (another Estée Lauder company) got more of the advertising muscle, and more of the product development dollar.

But for me, they were still very relevant in skincare. During my time doing Research & Development at a cosmetics company, Prescriptives had some outstanding and innovative products on the market with cutting-edge ingredients that I wanted to copy and expand on. They had a redness relief product that had an extensive list of skin soothers and skin barrier fortifiers. At the time, they were using Sea Whip extract, a top-notch ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties when topically applied to the skin. They also had an acne product that contained Salicylic Acid, a well-known acne fighter that doesn’t dry out your skin like benzoyl peroxide. They also had concentrates that used peptides, retinols, time-released technology, brighteners and luminizers, trademarked firmers and smoothers, and potent-antioxidants. They had a skincare line to be reckoned with.

So stock up while you can because you can still get Prescriptives products online and at retails stores, but only while inventory lasts. Prescriptives R.I.P., you will be missed!

My absolute favorite sun care product, L’Occitane’s After-Sun Balm Lotion is made with organic Cupuaçu (pronounced koo-poo-ah-SUE), an exotic superfruit from the cocoa family native to the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. Inside the pulp, the seeds contain a vegetable butter of premium quality that contains antioxidants, protein, and calcium.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cupuaçu Seed Butter, Butcher’s Broom extract, Coconut Oil, Calendula, Rosemary extract, and Vitamin E and A.

It instantly soothes sunburn with Calendula, Butcher’s Broom, and Gotu Kola extract, helps to prolong your tan through its excellent moisturizing and antioxidant properties from Cupuaçu and Shea, renews and protects your skin with Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Rosemary, and restores your skin’s natural moisture and elasticity with Honey, and Coconut Oil.

I love it because my skin is super smooth and intensely hydrated, which extends the color by helping to prevent peeling. An added plus is that it smells great without an overpowering, artificial-smelling fragrance.

Lancaster Tan MaxTan Maximizer Soothing Moisturizer Cream by Lancaster (4.2 oz. / $25)

I was first introduced to this product while working in the U.K. this past Winter.

The company claims that it boosts your tan by up to 80%. It contains the patent-pending “Tan Activator Complex” in a formula that re-moisturizes dehydrated skin while reducing the risk of peeling, for a more intense and longer-lasting tan.

Key Ingredients: Arginine, Vitamin C, Green Tea, Angelica Archangelica Root Extract, Coffea Arabica, Tocopherol, and Tyrosine.

It is an antioxidant-rich and soothing formula with Vitamin C, Green Tea, Bisabolol, Coffee Berry and Vitamin E, which all helps to protect skin with its restorative properties and fight free radicals. Amino acids like Arginine and Glycine with Glycerin enhances moisture-retention and absorption. Tyrosine is an amino acid that initiates the production of melanin.

In this lightweight, fast-absorbing cream,  I did  notice that it gave me a deeper tan, and helped to boost the melanin production in the skin and enhance my color. It’s soothing and hydrating formula is great after sunbathing.

Lancaster products are available in select stores across the United States like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, HSN (Home Shopping Network), and Lord & Taylor. Product availability varies by location.

clarinsAfter Sun Moisturizer Self-Tanning by Clarins (5 oz. / $30)

Clarins has always been apart of my sun care regimen for years, and this is my go-to default multi-tasking self-tanner/tan maintainer/ moisturizer all-in-one.

According to Clarins, their product helps intensify, accent and extend a tan while promoting a deeper golden tone. Well, that is true and more.  It’s a great product to use too if you just don’t have the time to lay out in the sun and if you do get some sun, it’s essential to keep your skin quenched, replenished, and relieved. The self-tanning properties (including DHA) builds on the color you’ve already gotten to give you a longer-lasting, deeper tan.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), Erythrulose, Aloe, Chamomile, Melon, Vitamin E, Cardamom, Sunflower, Mimosa Teniflora.

DHA, Erythrulose, and Cardamom extract work synergistically together to provide a more natural-looking, even, long-lasting appearance. Soothing agents like aloe, chamomile, and melon calms and restores skin. Shea, Sunflower, Mimosa Tenuiflora, and Vitamin E work  as hydrators,  and skin-smoothers to protect and promote a more radiant, natural-looking tan.

Note: DHA is a chemical that reacts with the skin’s amino acids to turn the skin brown. The active ingredients in sunscreens that provide UVA protection tend to block DHA’s absorption, so sunscreen needs to be applied afterward if you are venturing back out into sunlight.

AlbaKonaKona Coffee After-Sun Lotion by Alba Botanica (8.5 fl. oz / $11.95)

This lightweight and fragrant lotion glides on to keep your skin smooth, moisturized and smelling like you stepped off a tropical island.

Key Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Kukui Oil, Macadamia Oil, Awapuhi, Shea Butter, Coffea Arabica.

Soothing Aloe helps to calm from over-exposure to sun, rich skin conditioners like Vitamin E, Kukui, and Macadamia helps to nourish, protect and hydrate your skin, and natural fragrances of Coffee Berry, Papaya, Pineapple, and Awapuhi…an exotic blend of ingredients to extend the tan and prevent peeling.

0446216518494R_300x400After-Sun Care Tan Extender by Sisley (5 oz. / $158)

The most expensive of the bunch, this luxurious and light textured-cream is specifically designed to help repair and cool skin exposed to the sun. It moisturizes with a tan-extender formula that leaves skin golden and tan.

According to Sisley, a careful combination of self-tanning active ingredients (DHA <1% and Erythrulose) enhance the skin’s color in a very natural way. While this was true, for the price I would use it sparingly and alternate with the Clarins’ After Sun Moisturizing Self Tanning. I did like this product because it did penetrate and absorb quickly into my skin and my face felt silky-smooth.

Key Ingredients: Alkekengi Calyx, Shea Butter, Andiroba, Bisabolol, Sunflower, Vitamin E, Glycerin, Rapeseed, Stevia.

What is appealing to me in this Sisley product is that it contains the Winter Cherry also known as Alkekengi Calyx,  a potent antioxidant. They say it protects the cells’ DNA against highly destructive UV rays by preserving DNA molecular integrity and stimulating collagen synthesis.

It is also rich in soothing active ingredients Andiroba oil, and Bisabolol, it helps calm and cool the skin.
This also contains the moisturizing, protective, and restorative properties of Stevia leaf extract, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Sunflower, and Vitamin E.

Available at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue and other fine retailers.

lavera after sunLavera_Self_Tanning_LotionAfter Sun Lotion (5 oz. / $15) and Self-Tanning Lotion (2.1 oz. / $24.99) by Lavera

Tied at #7 on my list are two exceptional products made by Lavera.

Lavera is a leading manufacturer of organic, all natural skin care & make up, cruelty-free & paraben-free, made in Germany. Their products are beginning to make a splash into the USA via Target, Whole Foods, and CVS. Made with pure, organic plant oils, herb and flower extracts Lavera products are going to give the major brands a run for their money.

Lavera says After Sun Lotion gives your skin optimum after sun care with this cooling, refreshing lotion. Organic Jojoba and Vitamin E moisturize and nourish, helping to prevent fine lines and re-strengthen skin after a day in the sun.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Soy, Squalane, Sunflower, Almond, Jojoba, Aloe Vera, Lavender, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.

A great soothing formula with Aloe, Lavender, and Rosewater along with ultra-rich hydrators Shea and Squalane, as wll as oil from Sunflower, Sweet Almond, and Jojoba. Top it off with antioxidants from Green Tea, Vitamin C and E and its packing a lot of bang for its buck!

The Self-Tanning Lotion has Soy extract combined with DHA and Erythrulose to deliver a smooth, foolproof application and a natural, even color. Jojoba, Lavender, Aloe Vera, and Rosewater offer moisturizing benefits and leaving skin feeling refreshed, and restored.

Key Ingredients: DHA, Aloe,  Rose Flower Water, Green Tea, and Erythrulose.

This product gives a nice, subtle color and a good glow. The smell is okay and subsides after a few minutes.

But, it is for its quality ingredients, paraben-free and organic formula that Lavera made this list with two products.

The Cleanser Chronicles

The Cleanser Chronicles

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor
I am a believer that skin care is the very first step in the Makeup application and so I always talk to my client’s about what they are using to keep their skin in balance. Likewise, if they aren’t using a product they believe in, I can make some suggestions. I have my own personal “tried and true” cleansers on rotation. I switch it up sometimes based on the condition of my skin. I also like to have more than one to refer to clients and if you are getting to know me, you’ll begin to notice it’s about price point too.  I know too much to falsely believe you have to pay a lot for quality and you shouldn’t have to. It’s about what works- for you. Easy accessability at the local health food store or drugstore is a plus, too. Here are a few of my personal cleansing favorites, as well as ones most often referred to by my clients:
Exfoliation is the key to clear, smooth skin and this creamy, concentrated cleanser with  cotton muslin cloth makes cleansing and clarifying easy. The Eucalyptus smell makes you feel like you’re at a spa.
Jurlique has a variety of cleansers for virtually every skin type with wholesome ingredients that come right from their own farm.
With an impressive ingredient list and a solid, trusted reputation for quality, I find Dr. Hauschka’s cleansers are great for dry and sensitive skin types.
I recently discovered Nelson’s and I am so grateful that I did. This cleanser leaves my skin feeling clean, balanced and refreshed.
Alba’ has a cleanser for every skin type and is a tremendous value for the quality.
So, now you have a few natural, cruelty free cleansing options for virtually every skin type and every price point to explore and try for yourself. Explore and find one that suits your skin type and personal needs.

The Evolution of Mascara

The Evolution of Mascara

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor

masc_12One of the questions I am asked most is “ what is your favorite mascara?” For me, not only does mascara have to perform, but it also needs to be cruelty free and I’d like it to be non toxic, too. Sadly, a lot of the best loved mascara brands on the market- still insist upon tesing on animals. Until these Companies “Wake Up”….I wouldn’t spend my money on them if I were you. Today, you have a choice. Luckily, there are more and more options for “evolved” mascaras out there. I am always talking to women about this and so I decided to present some mascaras that come up most frequently in conversations. I believe I have put together a pretty good sampling of some of the best non toxic, cruelty free mascaras that are on the market at every price point. I have pointed out the ones that are Vegan.

Dr Hauschka Volumizing ( Vegan)

Client’s report a notable difference in volume- thickens the lash naturally.

Tarte Lash Hugger Eco-Friendly Mascara

Good stuff, performs well, and the packaging is made of post consumer recycled aluminum.

Logona ( Vegan)

I’ve heard great things about this mascara. I haven’t tried it myself but have heard rave reviews from models I have worked with. One girl called it simply, “lash conditioner”.

Suncoat Natural Sugar Based( Vegan)

Reviews are very good. Wears well.Doesn’t smudge, lengthens

Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara

Recyclable brush, doesn’t smudge or flake. Good stuff available at the local drugstore.

Beauty products are evolving and you have a lot of choices out there now. These mascaras mentioned above have revolutionized, while at the same time, simplified and purified their ingredients. Become an ingredient label reader. Educate yourself about what’s in the products you put into and onto your body. It takes less effort than you think. As always, reports differ from individual to individual. For some, a mascara may be smudge proof all day, but for those with oilier skin or hooded eyelids…..it might still smudge. Do your own research and find the mascara that best suits your needs.

Beauty from the Inside Out:  Five Things to Eat and Get Great, Glowing Skin

So, the next time you’re at the market, you should think about loading up your basket with some power-packed foods that will help to keep you looking fresh, vibrant, and young.

My shopping list for the store often includes quality and delicious foods to improve my skin because certain nutrients have been shown from research to have skin-hydrating, sun-protecting, and even wrinkle-preventing properties.

Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

1. Get Some Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

Spinach, broccoli, and many other dark, green leafy veggies are rich in minerals and vitamin A, which combats dryness and wrinkles.  Whether it’s fresh, raw, frozen or steamed, green vegetables really deliver on vitamin A, a skin-essential vitamin, antioxidant and wrinkle-fighter all wrapped in one!

2. Go for Brilliant Red & Bright Orange Fruits and Veggies

Eating richly-pigmented fruits of bright orange and brilliant red can help to replenish antioxidant levels in your skin. By doing so, you can help fight free radical damage that contributes to the signs of aging: from dryness to fine lines and crinkles. Great antioxidant-rich fruits include, but are not limited to, pomegranates, mangoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe.

The Organic Face

The Organic Face

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor

When I set out to do makeup professionally, one of the very first books I purchased to educate myself on product ingredients was “Don’t go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” by Paula Begoun. This is the bible for cosmetic ingredient research. When I started to educate myself about what exactly was in the products I was putting on not only my client’s faces, but my own- my whole thinking changed about cosmetics. When you are talking about Organic you are talking about a product that has been produced and manufactured by guidelines that strictly enforce an environment free of synthetic ingredients, chemicals and of course-GMO’s. Here are a few chemicals commonly found in cosmetics- DEA, Aluminum, Alcohol, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate and Mercury amongst many others. These chemicals are absorbed through your skin as toxins that store in the tissues of your body. Now, I am a big advocate of arming yourself with the ammunition of knowledge. Do your research.
