Fall Beauty Report: Change of The Season

Fall Beauty Report: Change of The Season

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor

It’s Fall.  Change of the season and time for a new approach in your beauty routine. It’s a great time to clean out your makeup bag and embrace a new start in your life…..so let’s start with the skin.

chantalchangeofseasonTime to let go of the spray tan. In realtime it’s Fall but a glimpse ahead to the Spring 2010 runways are already showing a backlash against the over tanned skin we have seen for several seasons now. Get ahead of the fashion game and focus right now on full face and body skin care. Exfoliation is key. Now is the time to find a facial exfoliation routine that suits you and also find your dream body scrub- be it dry brush or sugar/salts.

It’s also time to find your Fall/Winter foundation color. When new, post- Summer skin is revealed you will be inspired to nurture it and care for it during these next months when the change in the weather could trigger skin sensitivities. If you have an effective skin care routine- you will have less areas of redness or blemishes to cover. If dark under eye circles are a problem for you- first look at your diet and stress. Then go and find a peach toned or honey toned concealer to lightly blend into that area.

Makeup trends are showing a lot of darker lips- red, chocolate, berry and dark mulberry, even black. For Winter 2009 Chanel has the new Noir Obscure line which features several dark lipstick shades in dark colors closest to black like dark chocolate wine, and a violet black.

Chanel Noir Obscure Fall 2009 with Malgosia Bela

With a darker lip- we are seeing a trend toward a lighter eye makeup look. Focus on the lashes. If you main_eyelinerstylocan’t do without liner- a classic black line, close to the lash line to fill in any sparseness at the root will help the mascara give your eyes extra punch. A new liner to try is Nars Stylo- a liner that has a super fine precision tip making it easier to control the line you create. This is my new favorite liquid liner. Thick black lashes will pop the eye, but still give the appearance of a more natural makeup look when you forego shadow for lashes alone. You want thickness and volume in your mascara. Look for a thicker wand to do the trick. To also help naturally pop the eye and provide a frame for your face- groom your brows into a natural, thicker shape.

The cheek trend is a classic doll baby pink- applied to the center and blended out to create a youthful flush. My perennial favorite is Nars “Desire”.  It’s a more sophisticated, clean, polished makeup look: classic and modern at the same time. A fresh faced makeup approach for Fall, Winter and beyond.

Prescriptives: Death of A Beauty Brand

Prescriptives: Death of A Beauty Brand

Hadrian Miguel, Skincare & Lifestyle Director

PrescriptivesEstée Lauder has decided to pull the plug on its underperforming Prescriptives line, the department store beauty brand that began in 1979. Prescriptives made a big name for itself in the 80′s & 90′s for it’s Custom Blend Makeup. The only place at the time where you could find and make a foundation that matched your skin right on. Estée Lauder will stop marketing its Prescriptives brand and close its retail counters globally by Jan. 31, 2010.

Prescriptives was a big part of my life because my roommate in the early 1990′s drenched herself in Calyx, the equally-famous Prescriptives fragrance that was eventually copied into a designer imposter spray. Wow, I can almost smell the original now.

As time went on, Prescriptives lost its edge on color makeup and customization as MAC Cosmetics (a sister company) became more popular and as mineral makeup began to take its huge piece of the color cosmetics pie.  It also seemed that Clinique (another Estée Lauder company) got more of the advertising muscle, and more of the product development dollar.

But for me, they were still very relevant in skincare. During my time doing Research & Development at a cosmetics company, Prescriptives had some outstanding and innovative products on the market with cutting-edge ingredients that I wanted to copy and expand on. They had a redness relief product that had an extensive list of skin soothers and skin barrier fortifiers. At the time, they were using Sea Whip extract, a top-notch ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties when topically applied to the skin. They also had an acne product that contained Salicylic Acid, a well-known acne fighter that doesn’t dry out your skin like benzoyl peroxide. They also had concentrates that used peptides, retinols, time-released technology, brighteners and luminizers, trademarked firmers and smoothers, and potent-antioxidants. They had a skincare line to be reckoned with.

So stock up while you can because you can still get Prescriptives products online and at retails stores, but only while inventory lasts. Prescriptives R.I.P., you will be missed!

After Summer Special: 7 Ways to Extend Your Tan & Boost Your Color

After Summer Special: 7 Ways to Extend Your Tan & Boost Your Color

Hadrian Miguel, Skincare & Lifestyle Director

iStock_000009451870XSmallAlthough Fall is officially here and with global warming creating hotter weather at times least expected, now is a brilliant time to tell you that there are some great tan maximizers and enhancers on the market today to keep you looking bronzed longer.

These after-sun enhancers go by numerous names like tan extenders, maximizers, intensifiers, prolongers, or bronzers, but they all have one goal in common…to help intensify and enhance the color of your tan.

I’ve tried and tested the following products all Summer long, and while the price ranges from very affordable to luxury, there is something for everyone at every price point. I have chosen my Top 7 products that will boost your color and will leave you looking Tan-tastic well into the Autumn and any other time you can catch some sun, or not.

L'Occitane After-SunCupuaçu After-Sun Balm Lotion by L’Occitane (5.1 fl. oz. / $24)

My absolute favorite sun care product, L’Occitane’s After-Sun Balm Lotion is made with organic Cupuaçu (pronounced koo-poo-ah-SUE), an exotic superfruit from the cocoa family native to the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. Inside the pulp, the seeds contain a vegetable butter of premium quality that contains antioxidants, protein, and calcium.

Cupuaçu has excellent hydrating power, capable of absorbing more than 4 times its volume of water.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cupuaçu Seed Butter, Butcher’s Broom extract, Coconut Oil, Calendula, Rosemary extract, and Vitamin E and A.

It instantly soothes sunburn with Calendula, Butcher’s Broom, and Gotu Kola extract, helps to prolong your tan through its excellent moisturizing and antioxidant properties from Cupuaçu and Shea, renews and protects your skin with Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Rosemary, and restores your skin’s natural moisture and elasticity with Honey, and Coconut Oil.

I love it because my skin is super smooth and intensely hydrated, which extends the color by helping to prevent peeling. An added plus is that it smells great without an overpowering, artificial-smelling fragrance.

Ulta.comWarmth All Over Face Powder by Bare Escentuals (.1 oz. / $20)

To those that know me, this is my secret weapon…A perennial favorite of mine for many years, I use this powder year-round and there is not one day that goes by that I do not use it, either on myself or on others!

Warmth is part of the BareMinerals line by BareEscentuals and made with 100% pure, micronized minerals. It creates a healthy, sunlit look without actually having to lay out in the sun, and it is a complexion-booster that automatically gives you a healthy, natural, radiant glow. AND, if I do happen to get a little sun, it enhances my color with luminosity.

Key Ingredients: Mica, Bismuth Oxychloride, Iron Oxide

Simply brush on Warmth where the sun would naturally fall on your cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. It’s very lightweight, non-pore clogging, and so versatile that it can be used for an all over glow, as a highlighter, blush, cheek contour, eyeshadow or even lip color. A universal product, it works with every skin skin color and skin type. A must-have, go out and get yours TODAY!

Lancaster Tan MaxTan Maximizer Soothing Moisturizer Cream by Lancaster (4.2 oz. / $25)

I was first introduced to this product while working in the U.K. this past Winter.

The company claims that it boosts your tan by up to 80%. It contains the patent-pending “Tan Activator Complex” in a formula that re-moisturizes dehydrated skin while reducing the risk of peeling, for a more intense and longer-lasting tan.

Key Ingredients: Arginine, Vitamin C, Green Tea, Angelica Archangelica Root Extract, Coffea Arabica, Tocopherol, and Tyrosine.

It is an antioxidant-rich and soothing formula with Vitamin C, Green Tea, Bisabolol, Coffee Berry and Vitamin E, which all helps to protect skin with its restorative properties and fight free radicals. Amino acids like Arginine and Glycine with Glycerin enhances moisture-retention and absorption. Tyrosine is an amino acid that initiates the production of melanin.

In this lightweight, fast-absorbing cream,  I did  notice that it gave me a deeper tan, and helped to boost the melanin production in the skin and enhance my color. It’s soothing and hydrating formula is great after sunbathing.

Lancaster products are available in select stores across the United States like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, HSN (Home Shopping Network), and Lord & Taylor. Product availability varies by location.

clarinsAfter Sun Moisturizer Self-Tanning by Clarins (5 oz. / $30)

Clarins has always been apart of my sun care regimen for years, and this is my go-to default multi-tasking self-tanner/tan maintainer/ moisturizer all-in-one.

According to Clarins, their product helps intensify, accent and extend a tan while promoting a deeper golden tone. Well, that is true and more.  It’s a great product to use too if you just don’t have the time to lay out in the sun and if you do get some sun, it’s essential to keep your skin quenched, replenished, and relieved. The self-tanning properties (including DHA) builds on the color you’ve already gotten to give you a longer-lasting, deeper tan.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), Erythrulose, Aloe, Chamomile, Melon, Vitamin E, Cardamom, Sunflower, Mimosa Teniflora.

DHA, Erythrulose, and Cardamom extract work synergistically together to provide a more natural-looking, even, long-lasting appearance. Soothing agents like aloe, chamomile, and melon calms and restores skin. Shea, Sunflower, Mimosa Tenuiflora, and Vitamin E work  as hydrators,  and skin-smoothers to protect and promote a more radiant, natural-looking tan.

Note: DHA is a chemical that reacts with the skin’s amino acids to turn the skin brown. The active ingredients in sunscreens that provide UVA protection tend to block DHA’s absorption, so sunscreen needs to be applied afterward if you are venturing back out into sunlight.

AlbaKonaKona Coffee After-Sun Lotion by Alba Botanica (8.5 fl. oz / $11.95)

This lightweight and fragrant lotion glides on to keep your skin smooth, moisturized and smelling like you stepped off a tropical island.

Key Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Kukui Oil, Macadamia Oil, Awapuhi, Shea Butter, Coffea Arabica.

Soothing Aloe helps to calm from over-exposure to sun, rich skin conditioners like Vitamin E, Kukui, and Macadamia helps to nourish, protect and hydrate your skin, and natural fragrances of Coffee Berry, Papaya, Pineapple, and Awapuhi…an exotic blend of ingredients to extend the tan and prevent peeling.

0446216518494R_300x400After-Sun Care Tan Extender by Sisley (5 oz. / $158)

The most expensive of the bunch, this luxurious and light textured-cream is specifically designed to help repair and cool skin exposed to the sun. It moisturizes with a tan-extender formula that leaves skin golden and tan.

According to Sisley, a careful combination of self-tanning active ingredients (DHA <1% and Erythrulose) enhance the skin’s color in a very natural way. While this was true, for the price I would use it sparingly and alternate with the Clarins’ After Sun Moisturizing Self Tanning. I did like this product because it did penetrate and absorb quickly into my skin and my face felt silky-smooth.

Key Ingredients: Alkekengi Calyx, Shea Butter, Andiroba, Bisabolol, Sunflower, Vitamin E, Glycerin, Rapeseed, Stevia.

What is appealing to me in this Sisley product is that it contains the Winter Cherry also known as Alkekengi Calyx,  a potent antioxidant. They say it protects the cells’ DNA against highly destructive UV rays by preserving DNA molecular integrity and stimulating collagen synthesis.

It is also rich in soothing active ingredients Andiroba oil, and Bisabolol, it helps calm and cool the skin.
This also contains the moisturizing, protective, and restorative properties of Stevia leaf extract, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Sunflower, and Vitamin E.

Available at Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue and other fine retailers.

lavera after sunLavera_Self_Tanning_LotionAfter Sun Lotion (5 oz. / $15) and Self-Tanning Lotion (2.1 oz. / $24.99) by Lavera

Tied at #7 on my list are two exceptional products made by Lavera.

Lavera is a leading manufacturer of organic, all natural skin care & make up, cruelty-free & paraben-free, made in Germany. Their products are beginning to make a splash into the USA via Target, Whole Foods, and CVS. Made with pure, organic plant oils, herb and flower extracts Lavera products are going to give the major brands a run for their money.

Lavera says After Sun Lotion gives your skin optimum after sun care with this cooling, refreshing lotion. Organic Jojoba and Vitamin E moisturize and nourish, helping to prevent fine lines and re-strengthen skin after a day in the sun.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Soy, Squalane, Sunflower, Almond, Jojoba, Aloe Vera, Lavender, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.

A great soothing formula with Aloe, Lavender, and Rosewater along with ultra-rich hydrators Shea and Squalane, as wll as oil from Sunflower, Sweet Almond, and Jojoba. Top it off with antioxidants from Green Tea, Vitamin C and E and its packing a lot of bang for its buck!

The Self-Tanning Lotion has Soy extract combined with DHA and Erythrulose to deliver a smooth, foolproof application and a natural, even color. Jojoba, Lavender, Aloe Vera, and Rosewater offer moisturizing benefits and leaving skin feeling refreshed, and restored.

Key Ingredients: DHA, Aloe,  Rose Flower Water, Green Tea, and Erythrulose.

This product gives a nice, subtle color and a good glow. The smell is okay and subsides after a few minutes.

But, it is for its quality ingredients, paraben-free and organic formula that Lavera made this list with two products.

The Whiter Teeth Guide

The Whiter Teeth Guide

Hadrian Miguel, Skincare & Lifestyle Director

I believe whiter teeth is just as important as fresh breath, and there are many effective ways to achieve pearly-white teeth and a brighter smile. You can go out and buy special toothpastes and fancy whiteners already conveniently available at stores, but some of those products can be expensive, harsh, and uncomfortable.

Why not make your own brightener in the luxury of your own home using natural ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen?! It’s as simple as 1,2,3.

Here are some of the ingredients you’ll need:

Strawberries

Strawberries

Lemon Juice

Lemon Juice

Salt

Sea Salt

Baking Soda

Baking Soda

Did you know there is an enzyme in strawberries that is derived from malic acid that acts as a whitening agent?

Step 1 By rubbing some pureed strawberries onto your teeth, it is a natural way to brighten your smile.

Step 2 You’ll want to rinse with water after applying the strawberries to remove any leftover natural sugars and acids from the fruit.

Step 3 Blend a mixture of baking soda with a few drops of lemon juice and salt to make a simple paste. The baking soda, salt and lemon juice will act as a stain remover. Brush your teeth for a few minutes, and then rinse.

Note: The malic acid in strawberries combined with baking soda, salt, and lemon juice removes tooth discoloration such as red wine, coffee, and tea.

Make a fresh batch each day or prepare a small portion in advance and refrigerate, use 2-3 times per week.

Tips to Keeping Your Teeth White

Always brush your teeth immediately after eating, especially if eating or drinking foods that stain easily, such as cherries, coffee, tea, and other dark berries.

Limit your consumption of drinks that stain your teeth. A few of these include coffee, tea, red wine, and dark or artificially colored sodas. If you must drink these, I suggest drinking them though a straw to control the amount of liquid that comes into contact with your teeth.

If you follow this guide, you too can have a beautiful, bright, pearly-white smile!

The Cleanser Chronicles

The Cleanser Chronicles

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor
I am a believer that skin care is the very first step in the Makeup application and so I always talk to my client’s about what they are using to keep their skin in balance. Likewise, if they aren’t using a product they believe in, I can make some suggestions. I have my own personal “tried and true” cleansers on rotation. I switch it up sometimes based on the condition of my skin. I also like to have more than one to refer to clients and if you are getting to know me, you’ll begin to notice it’s about price point too.  I know too much to falsely believe you have to pay a lot for quality and you shouldn’t have to. It’s about what works- for you. Easy accessability at the local health food store or drugstore is a plus, too. Here are a few of my personal cleansing favorites, as well as ones most often referred to by my clients:
Exfoliation is the key to clear, smooth skin and this creamy, concentrated cleanser with  cotton muslin cloth makes cleansing and clarifying easy. The Eucalyptus smell makes you feel like you’re at a spa.
Jurlique has a variety of cleansers for virtually every skin type with wholesome ingredients that come right from their own farm.
With an impressive ingredient list and a solid, trusted reputation for quality, I find Dr. Hauschka’s cleansers are great for dry and sensitive skin types.
I recently discovered Nelson’s and I am so grateful that I did. This cleanser leaves my skin feeling clean, balanced and refreshed.
Alba’ has a cleanser for every skin type and is a tremendous value for the quality.
So, now you have a few natural, cruelty free cleansing options for virtually every skin type and every price point to explore and try for yourself. Explore and find one that suits your skin type and personal needs.

The Evolution of Mascara

The Evolution of Mascara

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor

masc_12One of the questions I am asked most is “ what is your favorite mascara?” For me, not only does mascara have to perform, but it also needs to be cruelty free and I’d like it to be non toxic, too. Sadly, a lot of the best loved mascara brands on the market- still insist upon tesing on animals. Until these Companies “Wake Up”….I wouldn’t spend my money on them if I were you. Today, you have a choice. Luckily, there are more and more options for “evolved” mascaras out there. I am always talking to women about this and so I decided to present some mascaras that come up most frequently in conversations. I believe I have put together a pretty good sampling of some of the best non toxic, cruelty free mascaras that are on the market at every price point. I have pointed out the ones that are Vegan.

Dr Hauschka Volumizing ( Vegan)

Client’s report a notable difference in volume- thickens the lash naturally.

Tarte Lash Hugger Eco-Friendly Mascara

Good stuff, performs well, and the packaging is made of post consumer recycled aluminum.

Logona ( Vegan)

I’ve heard great things about this mascara. I haven’t tried it myself but have heard rave reviews from models I have worked with. One girl called it simply, “lash conditioner”.

Suncoat Natural Sugar Based( Vegan)

Reviews are very good. Wears well.Doesn’t smudge, lengthens

Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara

Recyclable brush, doesn’t smudge or flake. Good stuff available at the local drugstore.

Beauty products are evolving and you have a lot of choices out there now. These mascaras mentioned above have revolutionized, while at the same time, simplified and purified their ingredients. Become an ingredient label reader. Educate yourself about what’s in the products you put into and onto your body. It takes less effort than you think. As always, reports differ from individual to individual. For some, a mascara may be smudge proof all day, but for those with oilier skin or hooded eyelids…..it might still smudge. Do your own research and find the mascara that best suits your needs.

So, the next time you’re at the market, you should think about loading up your basket with some power-packed foods that will help to keep you looking fresh, vibrant, and young.

My shopping list for the store often includes quality and delicious foods to improve my skin because certain nutrients have been shown from research to have skin-hydrating, sun-protecting, and even wrinkle-preventing properties.

Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

1. Get Some Dark & Green Leafy Veggies

Spinach, broccoli, and many other dark, green leafy veggies are rich in minerals and vitamin A, which combats dryness and wrinkles.  Whether it’s fresh, raw, frozen or steamed, green vegetables really deliver on vitamin A, a skin-essential vitamin, antioxidant and wrinkle-fighter all wrapped in one!

2. Go for Brilliant Red & Bright Orange Fruits and Veggies

Eating richly-pigmented fruits of bright orange and brilliant red can help to replenish antioxidant levels in your skin. By doing so, you can help fight free radical damage that contributes to the signs of aging: from dryness to fine lines and crinkles. Great antioxidant-rich fruits include, but are not limited to, pomegranates, mangoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe.

The Organic Face

The Organic Face

by Chantal Moore, Beauty Editor

When I set out to do makeup professionally, one of the very first books I purchased to educate myself on product ingredients was “Don’t go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” by Paula Begoun. This is the bible for cosmetic ingredient research. When I started to educate myself about what exactly was in the products I was putting on not only my client’s faces, but my own- my whole thinking changed about cosmetics. When you are talking about Organic you are talking about a product that has been produced and manufactured by guidelines that strictly enforce an environment free of synthetic ingredients, chemicals and of course-GMO’s. Here are a few chemicals commonly found in cosmetics- DEA, Aluminum, Alcohol, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate and Mercury amongst many others. These chemicals are absorbed through your skin as toxins that store in the tissues of your body. Now, I am a big advocate of arming yourself with the ammunition of knowledge. Do your research.

Making Beauty Cruelty Free:  Awakening to the need for cruelty free cosmetics

As a  Professional Makeup Artist, it is my responsibility to make sure that the products I use are of a quality to withhold the standards set within my industry by the top Makeup Artists in the world.  Whatever we use on our client’s has to perform and we seek out companies that have the best performing products for our client’s needs. As a conscious human being, I also feel a responsibility to not contribute to the suffering of animals for Beauty’s sake. There is just need for it. We as a society should be beyond this. No animal should have to endure the tortures of cosmetic testing. So, I began the process of taking my Makeup Kit (my professional tools and products for my work) to cruelty free a few years ago and I am here to tell you that if a Professional Makeup Artist can do it, you can easily do it, too. It is simple to do and you can do it without spending a lot of money.

How To Get Gorgeous Skin & Hair

Hadrian Miguel, LifeStyle & Skincare Director

Here are some very simple things you can do to get glowing skin and beautiful hair in next to no time…so get ready, set, GO!

Face mask to uncover vibrant skin

Face mask to uncover vibrant skin

Get Gorgeous Tip #1: Wear a Mask to Uncover a Beautiful You

Slap on a mask and see a difference in 10-15 minutes.
Because masks deliver an intense dose of ingredients and benefits, you can notice a difference right away and don’t have to wait weeks for results. It’s the best way to moisturize the heck out of your skin and achieve an incredible healthy glow.

Get Gorgeous Tip #2: Keeping Those Eyes Bright

To diminish dark circles, cut a potato into two thin slices and rest them on your eyes for 10-15 minutes. It has a skin-brightening enzyme (catecholase) that lightens the dark circles. To deflate puffiness under the eyes, place cold metal spoons on your eyes for a few minutes to tighten up the skin.

Get Gorgeous Tip #3: Slippery When Wet

The best time to apply moisturizer is right after you wash or shower, when your skin is still damp. Make sure to pat dry and then apply your moisturizer to seal in the moisture.
Note: If the skin is too wet, the cream will just slide right off your face!

FaceSpritzGet Gorgeous Tip #4: Cool Down with A Spritz

During warm weather days, spray mists with your favorite tonics can be refrigerated for cooling and soothing skin post sun-exposure or whenever you need a refresher.

So spritz on your favorite calming ingredients like aloe, chamomile, and lavender which is perfect for sunburned skin; antioxidant-rich Vitamins C and E, green tea and pomegranate helps your skin to fight off UV damage, and cooling ingredients like mint and cucumber help to quiet a hot, flushed face. Hydrators like olive and seed oils are excellent sources of to soften, smooth, and moisturize when skin is parched.

Get Gorgeous Tip #5: Don’t Let Products Weigh Your Hair Down

Shampoo and condition as usual. Just add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water and use it as a final rinse over the hair. Rinse well with cool water. This will remove any buildup or product residue from the hair and will help seal the cuticle, creating long-lasting shine and bounce.
